It’s been a feisty couple of weeks in the National Hockey League, hasn’t it?
In the past ten days we’ve seen a brawl in Pittsburgh between the Islanders and the Penguins, three fights in four seconds in a Bruins/Stars game, another goalie fight in an Original Six meeting between Boston and Montreal, and of course, the return match between the Pens and the Isles.
If you thought those first three games were good, just wait until you see what went down at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Friday!
After being shutout in the game that saw Penguins backup Brent Johnson break the face of their oft-injured goalie, Rick DiPietro, the Islanders were charged up heading into the rematch! In the first period alone there were four goals, a failed penalty shot, two fights and some hints of what was to come later on.
By the end of the night there were 346 penalty minutes, fifteen fighting majors, eleven game misconducts, and ten 10-minute misconducts. Oh, and 12 goals. (more…)

They also talk about UFC 126 where Anderson Silva front kicked Vitor Belfort for a huge win. And they comment on the return of Peter Forsberg to the NHL.
In this week’s GABBYs: on the good side – BIG fight week in the NHL, BIG fight opportunity in the UFC and BIG slap shots in the KHL. On the bad side, BAD hits in the NHL, BAD names for fans of soccer and a BAD injury for Evgeni Malkin.
In Quick Hits: Jennifer Heil calls it quits, Tom Brady is the AP NFL MVP and Jim and I are hosting a live sports roundtable.

Who knew Brent Johnson was a masher?!
The Pittsburgh Penguins backup made 20 stops in a 3-0 win over the NY Islanders on Wednesday night at the Consol Energy Center, but failed to earn his second shutout of the season. Why, you ask?
Somebody turned the “Lights Out” with less than 17 seconds to go!
It all started when Pens forward Matt Cooke bumped into Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro late in the game, which led to some pushing and shoving in the NY zone. It also led to Brent Johnson taking a leisurely skate down the ice to have a little chat with his fellow netminder. (Video, plus more goalie fights after the jump!) (more…)
Holy Roli!
Remember the time the Tampa Bay Lightning are tied for top spot in the Eastern Conference?
That time would be now, thanks to a 1-0 overtime win over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night, a 34-save shutout for newly acquired goalie Dwayne Roloson. The Lightning picked up Roli the Goalie on the weekend for practically nothing from the New York Islanders, sending him from the bottom of the standings to near the top.
I’ve always liked the way the unassuming Roloson carries himself – when he was with the Oilers, the thing that always stuck out for me was his insistence that he still had years of hockey ahead of him despite his age, since he had shared starting duties for a big chunk of his career. All Good Things…
Remember last week when the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team set an NCAA record with an 89th consecutive win?
Well, they squeezed one more win out of that impressive run before finally losing to ninth-ranked Stanford on Thursday night, ending the streak at 90 straight victories. Believe it or not, a loss to Stanford back on April 6th of 2008 was the last time the UConn Huskies tasted bitter defeat. It looks like they have their number!
Oddly enough, the UCLA men’s basketball team that held the previous record of 88 straight wins ended up losing to the same team, Notre Dame, on either side of their streak as well. (more…)
