The University of Louisville Cardinals have won the NCAA Basketball Championship.
Monday night in Atlanta in a very entertaining basketball game, the University of Louisville Cardinals defeated the University of Michigan Wolverines 82-76.
While all the talk was about the amazing three point shooting by Wolverines one game wonder Spike Albrecht, who literally came out of nowhere to score 17 points, the play of Cardinals guard Luke Hancock deserves greater praise.
Hancock scored 22 points in thirty minutes of work while coming off the bench. He also scored 20 points in the Wolverines’ 72-68 thriller over the University of Wichita State Shockers in the semi-final on Saturday.
With the Cardinals winning Monday, it enhances the legendary status of Cardinals coach Rick Pitino.
Pitino became the first men’s college basketball coach to win the NCAA Basketball Championship at two different schools. Pitino previously won at the University of Kentucky in 1996.

Daniel Nestor (Wikimedia Commons)
This weekend is an extremely significant one when it comes to the history of Canadian tennis. Team Canada is tied 1-1 with Team Italy in the quarterfinals heading into a key doubles match today and two singles matches on Sunday.
This afternoon (Saturday, Sportsnet, 4:30 p.m., joined in progress) Daniel Nestor of Toronto and Vasek Pospisil of Vancouver will take on the Italian pair of Paolo Lorenzi and Daniele Braccaili. It will be interesting to see how much energy Pospisil has in the tank after he lost a five set marathon to Andreas Seppi on Friday afternoon. Canadian head coach Martin Laurendeau ridiculously went with Pospisil over Jesse Levine, who is overall a much better tennis player.
Sunday’s matches are right now Milos Raonic versus Seppi (Saturday, Sportsnet, 3:00 p.m.) followed by Pospisil versus Fabio Fognini.
Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

We’re coming to the second busiest sports month of the year. April. Where has March gone? I know.
Anyways. It is a huge weekend for the Edmonton Oilers as they will be hosting their two western Canadian foes– the Vancouver Canucks tonight (CBC, 8:00 p.m.) and the Calgary Flames on Easter Monday (Sportsnet, 7:30 p.m.).
With 15 games left on the schedule, the Oilers are three points back of the St. Louis Blues for a playoff spot. That means every five games, they will have to pick up a point on the Blues, and hope they are slightly better than three other teams that are in front of them– the Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars and Nashville Predators.
Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Patrick Chan (David Carmichael, Wikimedia Commons)
2011 Lionel Conacher Award winner Patrick Chan of Ottawa, Ontario is one step closer to defending his title at the World Figure Skating Championships in Nice, France.
Today, Chan put down a solid short program, and leads the Czech Republic’s Michal Brezina by 1.74 points. Due to the fact the television coverage on CBC is absolutely lousy, the event can be seen live on www.cbcsports.ca or if you have Bold. The final flight of skaters in the men’s event is at 8am and the final flight of skaters in the women’s event is at 1:30pm on Saturday with Alena Leonova of Russia in the lead. In the pairs competition today, Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov hammered the strong German pair of Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy by 8.04 points, but only hung onto the silver medal behind the Germans after a poor short program.

Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin is three victories away from winning the Women’s World Curling Championship in Lethbridge.
Yesterday afternoon, Nedohin got things back on track with a 9-8 victory over the United States in the fourth place tie-breaker.
Nedohin’s team got off to a commanding 4-0 lead after the second end before hanging on for the narrow victory. They now will have to face Korea’s Ji-Sun Kim in the 3-4 game this afternoon (1pm, TSN). With a win, they will then face Switzerland’s Mirjam Ott, the two-time Olympic silver medallist in the semi-final (6pm, TSN) and then if they win that, they will have to face Sweden’s Margaretha Sigfridsson in the final (Sunday, 4:30pm).
