The Los Angeles Kings are starting to play with the same sort of confidence that won them the Stanley Cup last season.
On Friay night in southern California, the Kings defeated the St. Louis Blues 2-1 to win he series 4-2. Former Edmonton Oiler Dustin Penner scored the game winning goal with two tenths of a second left in the second period to break a 1-1 deadlock.
The Kings will now face either the San Jose Sharks or the Anaheim Ducks in the second round. If Detroit eliminates Anaheim in game seven, the Kings will play the Sharks. However if Anaheim wins, the Kings will play the Ducks.
One of the funnies quotes in the Stanley Cup Playoffs came before the game from Kings head coach Darryl Sutter. When asked about Kings’ defenceman Robyn Regehr’s broken nose, Sutter said the following:
“Yeah, he got hit in the nose again. It was broke, so he can’t re-broke it.”

Jay Bouwmeester (Wikimedia Commons)
It is safe to say that the Calgary Flames are officially in a time of transition, and yes Flames fans, you got what you are looking for and that is the start of a massive rebuilding process.
On Monday night prior to the Flames 4-1 loss to Edmonton, Calgary traded their most coveted defenceman in Jay Bouwmeester to the St. Louis Blues for two prospects and a conditional draft pick.
The prospects are Swiss goaltender Reto Berra and former Windsor Spitfire defenceman Mark Cundari. The conditional draft choice meanwhile is dependent on whether or not the Blues make the playoffs this season. If the Blues do not go to the playoffs in 2013, the Flames get the Blues’ number four pick in 2013 and then their number one pick in 2014.
In 33 games this season, Bouwmeester has six goals and nine assists for 15 points, but is a -11. However he is extremely valuable for his endurance because he has not missed a game since the 2005 lockout.

Miikka Kiprusoff (James Teterenko, Wikimedia Commons)
The Calgary Flames (1-2) won their first game of the season Thursday night in Montreal against the Canadiens and goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff set a prestigious team record.
In making 35 saves, Kiprusoff passed Mike Vernon as the all-time leader for the Calgary Flames in goaltending wins with 263.
It was a significant night for Rene Bourque who scored two goals on three shots. His first goal came on the power play to tie the game at one. Then he scored his third of the season in the second period from Matt Stajan and Chris Butler.
Butler, who picked up two assists, recorded his first two points as a member of the Flames. The young defenceman was acquired by Calgary in the deal that saw Robyn Regehr go to the Sabres. Alex Tanguay also notched a multi-point game with two assists. David Moss and Niklas Hagman also scored the Flames.
The Flames will continue on the road, as they next play the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Air Canada Centre on Saturday night. Game time is 5pm.

Finally, the National Hockey League in Winnipeg returns this weekend as the Jets host the Montreal Canadiens at the MTS Center (Sunday, CBC, 3PM). When the Phoenix Coyotes moved to Winnipeg on July 1, 1996, Manitoba sports fans have been circling this date on their calendar. Fifteen years later and they finally have their wish. Players that will become household Jets’ names will include Andrew Ladd, Dustin Byfuglien, Bryan Little, Blake Wheeler and Evander Kane.
The Canadiens (0-1) meanwhile got off to a slow start as they lost 2-0 to the Toronto Maple Leafs Thursday night at the Air Canada Centre. James Reimer was brilliant in posting a shutout.

Simon Gagne (Wikimedia Commons)
The National Hockey League Season starts in one hour from now.
For the first time in hockey history I am predicting that the Stanley Cup is coming to Los Angeles.
I like the Kings’ nucleus of talent and their two key acquisitions– Simon Gagne from Tampa Bay and Mike Richards from Philadelphia. They also have two of the best young defencemen in the game in Drew Doughty and Jack Johnson and solid goaltending in Jonathan Quick.
I like how the Sabres improved their team as well in acquiring Ville Leino from Philadelphia and defencemen Christian Ehrhoff from Vancouver and Robyn Regehr from Calgary. They have excellent balance of youth and experience, plus outstanding goaltending in Ryan Miller.
In the west, I am predicting the Columbus Blue Jackets to make the playoffs over the Phoenix Coyotes. The loss of Ilya Bryzgalov to Philadelphia will be a huge blow for them, while the Blue Jackets got another sniper in Jeff Carter from Philadelphia.
In the east, I think it will now be the year that the Toronto Maple Leafs make the postseason. I am predicting them and the Carolina Hurricanes to make the playoffs over the Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Rangers.

Scott Hannan (Bridget Samuels, Wikimedia Commons)
The Calgary Flames have signed a defensive minded defenceman at a great price.
On Saturday, the Flames’ General Manager Jay Feaster signed blueliner Scott Hannan from the Washington Capitals to a one year contract worth $1 million.
Hannan will expect to replace the role of Robyn Regehr. Regehr was traded with Ales Kotalik and a second round pick in 2012 from the Flames to the Buffalo Sabres for Paul Byron and Chris Butler on June 25.
Hannan is known as a stay at home defenceman, who scored one goal and ten assists with the Capitals and Colorado Avalanche in 2010-11. Hannan played seven years for the San Jose Sharks and three full seasons for the Avalanche before being traded to Washington for Tomas Fleischmann on November 30, 2010.
Hannan also is strong physically, but has a disciplined dimension to his game. At 6’1″, 225 pounds, Hannan has been very effective in a shutdown role in his career, but only has taken 484 penalty minutes in 830 games.

Robyn Regehr (Wikimedia Commons)
According to TSN, the Calgary Flames have traded assistant captain Robyn Regehr to the Buffalo Sabres.
The veteran defenceman was officially traded this morning with veteran forward Ales Kotalik to the Sabres for defenceman Chris Butler, young center Paul Byron, and a second round pick in the 2012 National Hockey League Entry Draft.
Regehr, who won a Gold medal for Canada at the 2004 World Cup, is a strong defensive-minded defenceman, who was a +27 for the Flames back in 2007. In 79 games in 2010-11, Regehr had two goals, 15 assists and was a +2.
The native of Recife, Brazil, played eleven years for the Flames, who acquired him in the Theoren Fleury blockbuster trade with the Colorado Avalanche in 1999.
Kotalik will make his return to Buffalo, after playing there from 2001-09. He never really fit in Calgary, only scoring seven goals and four assists in 52 games over the last two seasons.
Byron has only played eight NHL games, notching a goal and an assist for the Sabres last season. Butler is a downgrade defensively from Regehr for the Flames. He had nine points in 49 games in 2010-11.
The Flames also re-signed Alex Tanguay to a five year deal worth $17 million. According to TSN, the signing eliminates the possibility of Calgary getting into the sweepstakes for Banff native Ryan Smyth.
Last year, Tanguay had 22 goals and 47 assists for the Flames, an increase of 32 points from the previous season where he played in Tampa Bay.
