Random Friday Thoughts: NBA Talks Scheduled, Silva Sings, Ocho Pays Fine

Do or Die for NBA?

As the NBA lockout nears its second full month, we’re getting word now that the “big wigs” from both sides will be meeting sometime next week.

That’s noteworthy for two reasons: For one, it’ll be only the second time they’ve all been face-to-face since the lockout began on July 1st. As well, if no progress is made at the meeting, it could be a sign that games will be missed as a result of this work stoppage.

NBA commissioner David Stern has said that no progress by Labor Day weekend would be bad news for the league and its players. Let’s face it – there won’t be much, if any progress at this meeting. The two sides haven’t been talking and when they do talk, it hasn’t been positive.

One thing the players (some of them, anyway) have in their favor at the moment is the fact that they can continue to make money during the lockout, whether it’s signing deals in Europe or starring in movies. Owners around the league might be in some trouble though, especially if they also own the arena their team plays in… (more…)

And I’m sticking to it – 15 minutes of fame with Jim and Geoffrey

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Hello folks! It’s Monday morning and that means a new 15 Minutes of Fame video.

This week, the 15 Minutes of Fame all-stars discuss well, the NHL all-star draft. They also give their picks for this year’s Superbowl, talk about all the hype surrounding Wayne Gretzky’s 50th birthday and they talk about their time spent independent of each other at the same Oil City Derby match.

In this week’s GABBYs, on the good side: 15 Minutes of Fame gets its 1,000th view in large part thanks to the fine folks in Sweden, Lea Sweatt gets his first NHL point and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says that he’ll only take $1 salary if there is a lockout.
On the bad side: the NHL’s Erik Johnson’s own goal, the Toronto Raptors can’t score a three-point basket and Fox Sports wants NASCAR to tone it down.

In Quick Hits: Ray Emery might get another chance at the NHL, Bettman says time is running out on Phoenix sale and concussions are on the NHL general manager’s radar.

Polamalu’s Hair: Week Twenty-One Notes

Hair We Go!

When the current NFL season started back in September, there were 32 teams getting ready for what they hoped (realistically or not) would be a championship season.

Heading into the last weekend of January only two teams remain though, as the Pittsburgh Steelers get set to face the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLV in Dallas, Texas. Now, if you think the big story here is Ben Roethlisberger vs. Aaron Rodgers, I regret to inform you that you are absolutely wrong.

No, there is a much bigger battle being waged on February 6th: That would be the one between Head & Shoulders and Suave.

That’s right folks, the flowing locks of Pittsburgh’s Troy Polamalu (our hero here in the football division of Kerrzy’s Notebook) will go “head to head” with the golden mane of Green Bay’s Clay Matthews on that fateful Sunday. (more…)

Polamalu’s Hair: Week Twenty Notes

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

Goodbye Brett?

If it feels like we’ve been through this song and dance before, it’s because we have been.

Brett Favre filed his retirement papers with the NFL this week, which appears to close the book on the career of a legendary Super Bowl winning quarterback after a 20th season in the pro ranks. That news comes at the end of a dreadfully disappointing 2010 season that saw his numbers drop off, injuries get the best of him and his prized “consecutive starts” record come to an end.

Is Brett Favre done for good though?

It looks that way – he’s said time and again that “it’s time” and he has come to peace with that idea. Further to that, Vikings coach Leslie Frazier says he isn’t interested in trying to convince the old gunslinger to come back for another season.

So, is Favre done for good? (more…)

Picture This!

Well, the Brett Favre thing is finally over…

No, I’m not talking about his career just yet. I’m talking about the NFL’s investigation into the allegations that he sent dirty pictures to a former NY Jets sideline reporter during his time in the Big Apple. So, did he send them after all? What about that video that people say he asked her for?

Well, the probe is over but we still don’t actually know.

The league fined Favre $50,000 on Wednesday for what it calls his failure to cooperate with investigators. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the 41-year-old was “not candid in several respects” which resulted in a longer investigation and extra bad press for all parties involved.

The league said he didn’t violate its workplace-conduct policy though, which means no one is really sure if he actually sent those “below the belt” picture messages or not. The ruling leaves it pretty open, but I think most people will assume that his apparent evasiveness means he probably did it! (more…)
