Rangers shutout Devils in New Jersey–How impressed are you with the goaltending?

The New York Rangers have taken a 2-1 series lead against the New Jersey Devils in the Eastern Conference Final.

Saturday the Rangers got a shutout from Henrik Lundqvist, who made 36 saves, and got goals from Ryan Callahan, Dan Girardi, and their rookie wiz kid Chris Kreider.

But all hockey fans must be absolutely mesmerized by the recent play of Martin Brodeur, who has made several saves of the spectacular variety in the series. The best one was in the Devils’ game two win, when Brodeur made what fans all calling a scorpion save off of Marian Gaborik. Brodeur swung up his pad while lying on the ground in a last ditch effort to make a save and remarkably made it.

Weekend Sports Preview–March 3 & 4–Brier, NHL

Saturday, March 3rd, 2012

The 2012 Tim Horton’s Brier commences today from Saskatoon. Alberta will be represented this year by Kevin Koe who curled out of the Saville Sports Centre in Edmonton in recent years before making the switch to the Glencoe Curling Club in Calgary for this season.

Koe’s opening game will be seen live tonight at 5:30pm on TSN against British Columbia’s Jim Cotter.

In my opinion there are four teams that will contend for the championship. Koe, the 2010 World Champion, will be joined by Glenn Howard of Ontario, the 2007 World Champion, Brad Gushue of Newfoundland, the 2006 Olympic Winter Games Champion, and Brad Jacobs of Northern Ontario, who finished in third place at the 2010 Tim Horton’s Brier.

The field will not have Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton, who won the 2011 World Curling Championship, and defeated Howard 8-6 in last year’s final. Stoughton failed to make the Manitoba Provincial Semi-Final in Dauphin, Manitoba this year.

The first televised game is Manitoba versus Quebec today at 12:30pm with draw times of 7:30am, 12:30pm and 5:30pm tomorrow.

Kerrzy’s Notebook: Goals of the Week!

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

Another week has come and gone in the National Hockey League, which means it’s time for another look at the top goals from around the rinks!

This time on the GOTW, Lightning strikes against the Ducks, a captain comes up big in overtime, a grizzled veteran shows off some silky hands, a Senator undresses a Capital and a Penguin undresses an entire team!

Let’s go!

5. Teddy Purcell

This beauty goal from the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Teddy Purcell (starts at the 1:30 mark) begins with a nifty toe drag and ends with a backhander to the top shelf – what a beauty!

(Check out the REST OF THE BEST after the jump!) (more…)

Kerrzy’s Notebook: C is for Captain

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

It’s one of the greatest honors you can be given in a team sport, and two more NHL players are now part of that club.

The NY Rangers announced on Monday that 26-year-old winger Ryan Callahan will wear the “C” this season, becoming the 26th player in team history to hold that honor. Last Friday, the St. Louis Blues named power forward David Backes the franchise’s 22nd captain since 1967.

Callahan and Backes join a pretty solid list of players who have captained either the Rangers or Blues, from Mark Messier and Wayne Gretzky, to Brian Leetch and Al MacInnis. With that extra bit of fabric on your shirt comes a lot of responsibility in the dressing room and on the ice, but I’m sure both players are up to the challenge – it’s not something that coaches give out just for the sake of having a captain.

Just ask the NJ Devils, the Buffalo Sabres, the Florida Panthers and the Colorado Avalanche… (more…)
