Canada’s Pan Am Gold count at 28

Saturday, October 29th, 2011

Canada now has 28 Gold medals at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Yesterday, Mary Spencer of Wiarton, Ontario won Gold in the women’s light heavtweight boxing division. Spencer, considered by many a threat to come away with an Olympic medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, defeated Yenebier Guillen of the Dominican Republic 15-11 in the Gold medal bout.

Canada’s other Gold medals have come in canoeing.

In the C-1 200m, Richard Dalton of Halifax was the Gold medallist. In the K-2 200m, Ryan Cochrane of Windsor, Nova Scotia and Hughes Fournel of Dorval, Quebec got to the top of the podium, as well as Steven Jorens of Candiac, Quebec and Richard Dober Jr. of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec in the men’s K-2 1000m.

Team Canada also still has the opportunity to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in two key team sports. Canada is playing for Gold in men’s field hockey against Argentina and against the United States in men’s water polo with the winners booking their tickets to London.

Cochrane wins silver for Canada Sunday

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

The 2011 World Aquatics Championships in Shaghai, China wrapped up today and the Canadian swim team came away with a final medal.

In the men’s 1500 metre freestyle, Ryan Cochrane, the 2008 Olympic Summer Games’ bronze medallist in the same discipline, won silver behind China’s Sun Yang, who won the race in World Record time of 14:34:14.

Cochrane’s time was 14:44.46. It was his second medal for Canada at the World Aquatics Championships. He won a silver in the men’s 800 metre freestyle on Tuesday. But at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, only the 1500 metre freestyle, and not the 800 metre freestyle is contested by the men. Hungary’s Gergo Kis won bronze in the men’s 1500 metre freestyle with a time of 14:45.66.

Overall, it was Canada’s seventh medal at the World Championships. Canadian athletes won four silver medals and three bronze medals, to finish eighth overall in the medal standings.

China had the most medals with 36, followed by the United States with 32 and Russia with 18.

Cochrane adds to Canada’s medal count at World Aquatics Championships

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

With the 2012 Summer Olympic Games scheduled to take place exactly one year from now in London, England, Victoria, British Columbia’s Ryan Cochrane continues to swim at a very elite level.

On Wednesday, at the World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai, China, Cochrane posted a time of 7:41.86 in the men’s 800m to win the silver medal.

Cochrane, who won the bronze medal in the men’s 1500m at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing (Canada’s lone swimming medal) will not have a chance to win in the 800m at London next year however because that freestyle event is only open to women at the Olympic level.

China’s Sun Yang won Gold and Hungary’s Gergo Kis won bronze.

Cochrane will have a great chance to win a second individual medal in the men’s 1500m on Sunday.
