The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have found their replacement to the fired Marcel Bellefeuille.
On Saturday, the Tiger-Cats named George Cortez as their head coach. Cortez, most recently was the quarterbacks coach for the Buffalo Bills in the National Football League.
This past season he helped oversee Ryan Fitzpatrick record a career high 3832 passing yards and 24 touchdown passes. However, after a fast start where the Bills went 5-2, they only won one more game in their final nine games.
Cortez has a strong history in the Canadian Football League. He has worked as an assistant coach for the Montreal Concordes, Montreal Alouettes, Ottawa Rough Riders, Calgary Stampeders and Saskatchewan Roughriders. He has also spent extensive time with incoming quarterback Henry Burris. Cortez was the Stampeders’ offensive co-ordinator from 2006-2009, and the two led Calgary to a Grey Cup in 2008.
Hamilton had a record of 8-10 last season, and advanced to the Eastern Final, where they lost to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Ryan Fitzpatrick (Ed Yourdon, Wikimedia Commons)
There are three teams now left at 3-0. One should expect the Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers. Some might expect the defensively improved Detroit Lions, but I bet nobody would expect the offensive powering Buffalo Bills.
But yes folks, the Bills, yes the Buffalo Bills are 3-0. Sunday, the Bills upset the New England Patriots 38-31. They have now outscored their opponents over 180 minutes 113-73. Buffalo not only is unbeaten, they’ve scored the most points in the NFL. Sunday, the Bills not only delivered the most significant upset, they did it in remarkable fashion. They were down 21-0 midway through the second quarter before their outstanding comeback.
A major reason for the Bills’ success has been the play of quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick who threw for 369 yards. The Gilbert, Arizona native now has 841 yards passing over the first three weeks of the season.
Sunday night almost saw another upset as the Pittsburgh Steelers barely beat the Indianapolis Colts 23-20. The Steelers had many opportunities to blow this game away, but Ben Roethlisberger had two fumbles and threw an interception in the second quarter that made the game tight.

It is a jammed pack weekend of sports coverage, and I will be keeping an eye on a wide variety of sports.
In rugby, Canada is looking for a second consecutive victory when they take on the mighty French. France has one more point in the Group A Standings because they were able to record four tries in their 47-21 hammering of Japan.
The Canadians meanwhile exemplified outstanding determination in coming from behind to beat Tonga. They were down 20-13 with about ten minutes left before the Canadians scored 12 unanswered points to win. The game can be seen at 2:30am on Sunday morning on TSN.

Lee Evans (Ed Yourdon, Wikimedia Commons)
The Buffalo Bills have traded their second best wide receiver.
On Friday, the Bills traded Lee Evans to the Baltimore Ravens for a fourth round draft pick. With the acquisition of Evans, the Ravens become significantly stronger offensively. They can put Anquan Boldin on one side of their offensive formation and Evans on the other side. Suddenly, the options become abundant for quarterback Joe Flacco, who can also hand the ball off to Ray Rice at anytime.
I know the Ravens are known for their defense, but suddenly their offense, in my opinion, matches up very well against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North, even with the loss of tight end Todd Heap to the Arizona Cardinals.
From a Bills’ standpoint, Stevie Johnson becomes the undisputed number one target for starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Johnson had a breakout year in 2010 catching 82 passes for 1073 yards and ten touchdowns. But with the loss of Evans, Johnson will see the starting cornerbacks of many elite teams. It will be interesting to see if he gets as open in 2011 as he did in 2010.
From a financial perspective, the Bills actually save $3.25 million.

Execution?
When Fox News analyst Tucker Carlson went on TV last month and said the words “Michael Vick” and “execution” in the same sentence, he wasn’t talking about his passer rating.
No, he was talking about how the Philadelphia Eagles QB should have been put to death for his abuse of dogs, which Vick spent two years in prison for.
Hold your applause.
This week he was back on “Hannity” to address those comments and showcase some of the other ridiculous things that go on inside his silly little head.
First off, despite a monotone delivery when he uttered the phrase “I believe fervently in second chances, but Michael Vick killed dogs,” Carlson says he just got “too emotional” when the subject came up.
Carlson says he’s not even comfortable with the death penalty, so of course he doesn’t think Vick should be executed. Here’s the thing though, he said it on national TV. If you thought that was good, just wait until you hear what comes next! (more…)

I’m starting a trend. I’ve gone 10-6 each week over the first three and have an overall record of 30-18. Last week I was wrong with Green Bay, Miami, San Francisco, Washington, New Orleans and San Diego. Let’s hope we do a little better in week 4. I know one thing. I won’t be 10-6 again because Dallas, Minnesota, Kansas City and Tampa Bay have the bye.
11am
Atlanta over San Francisco–A lot more was expected from the 49ers at the start of the season, and Mike Singletary’s job could be in jeopardy if they go to 0-4.
NY Jets over Buffalo–It will be a long day for Ryan Fitzpatrick. Maybe they’ll have to go to Trent Edwards. Oh wait a sec. Forget about that idea Chan Gailey. You released Edwards this week and he is now in Jacksonville.
