Eskimos horrible in loss to Alouettes

Saturday, August 18th, 2012

The Edmonton Eskimos played horrible Friday night at Commonwealth Stadium, losing 38-25 to the Montreal Alouettes.

It was quite possibly their worst first half in quite some time– on offense and defense. The Alouettes scored the first four touchdowns of the football game en route to the easy win.

Anthony Calvillo had a field day, going 22 for 32 and 327 yards passing. He was easily able to find Patrick Lavoie, Brian Bratton, Victor Anderson and S.J. Green, as all four of them waltzed into the end zone.

Stampeders blow it against Alouettes!

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

The Montreal Alouettes recorded a dramatic victory in beating the Calgary Stampeders 33-32 at Percival Molson Stadium in Montreal on Thursday night.

Down 32-20 with less than two minutes left, Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo capped off an impressive drive by throwing a seven yard touchdown pass to S.J. Green.

Then on the next Stampeders’ drive quarterback Kevin Glenn threw an interception to Jerald Brown, who ran the football all the way to the one yard line. Then after two failed attempts to punch the football into the end zone, Calvillo threw a three yard touchdown pass to Patrick Lavoie.

Calvillo sets another CFL record

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

For the second time this season, Montreal Alouettes’ quarterback Anthony Calvillo has set a CFL record in a game against the Toronto Argonauts, and for the second time this season has passed Damon Allen in the record books.

On Thursday night at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Calvillo broke Allen’s record with most completions in a Canadian Football League career.

By throwing an 18 yard pass to Brandon London, Calvillo threw his  record 5,159th career pass.

In week three, Calvillo broke Allen’s record of 394 career touchdown passes when he connected with Eric Deslauriers in a 40-17 Montreal win on July 15th from McGill Stadium.

There’s a very good chance that Calvillo could break Allen’s CFL record for most passing yards this season as well. Heading into tonight’s game, he had 69, 646 yards. Allen’s record is 72, 381 yards.

Currently the Montreal Alouettes lead the Toronto Argonauts 20-13. Calvillo has a 16 yard touch down pass to S.J. Green.

If the Alouettes win, they’ll move ahead of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats into sole possession of second place in the CFL Eastern Division.

Calvillo enters the record books

Move over Damon Allen. You now have company.

On a day when the magic number seemed to be five (Derek Jeter went 5 for 5 in collecting 3,000 hits), Anthony Calvillo tied Allen’s record for most career regular season touchdown passes in the Canadian Football League with 394. Calvillo threw for five touchdown passes in a 39-25 Montreal Alouettes’ win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday.

Two of Calvillo’s passes Saturday were of the long bomb variety. He threw a pass of 54 yards to Brian Bratton and 55 yards to Tim Maypray. Two other passes were short little drops deep in Saskatchewan territory–two yards to Bratton and four yards to running back Brandon Whitaker.

Calvillo’s other touchdown pass was to S.J. Green for 24 yards. Jamel Richardson caught nine passes for 114 yards, to lead all Alouettes in receiving.

With the win, Montreal moves to 2-0, while the reigning Western Division finalist Saskatchewan Roughriders fall to a very surprising 0-2.

Calvillo can set the record on Friday when the Alouettes host the Toronto Argonauts.

Weekend Sports Preview November 27-28

Friday, November 26th, 2010

This is one weekend that is marked on every Canadian sports fan’s calendar from coast to coast. On Sunday, the 98th Grey Cup Game will take place at Commonwealth Stadium  in Edmonton, and for the second consecutive year the teams will be the Saskatchewan Roughriders (10-8) and Montreal Alouettes (12-6).

This will be the third time that a team from Montreal and a team from Regina would have played in the Grey Cup. In 1931, the Montreal AAA Winged Wheelers defeated the Regina Rams 22-0 to win the 19th Grey Cup Championship. It was the first Grey Cup where a forward pass was allowed and the first title game where a point could be scored from a drop kick or place kick. The Wheelers recorded three touchdowns from Pete Jotkus, Kenny Grant and Wally Whitty en route to the shutout.

Then last year, the Montreal Alouettes squeaked out a dramatic 28-27 win. Saskatchewan thought they won it when Alouette kicker Damon Duval missed a last second field goal, but amazingly they had 13 men on the field, and Duval was allowed to rekick, and drained a 33 yard attempt.

Weekend Sports Preview–November 19-21

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Henry Burris

This weekend we’ll find out the answer to major question on many Canadian sports’ fans minds.

Who will play in the 98th Grey Cup next Sunday in Edmonton?

The Montreal Alouettes and the Toronto Argonauts will battle in the Eastern Final at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium (Sunday, 11am, TSN), and the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Calgary Stampeders will duel at McMahon Stadium in Calgary for the Western Final (Sunday, 2:30pm. TSN).

In the East, the Alouettes are disappointed they only had three players selected to the CFL All-Star Team– guard Scott Flory, linebacker Chip Cox and defensive end John Bowman.

It will be interesting to see how Montreal rebounds after losing 30-4 to Toronto in the final week of the regular season. I know Anthony Calvillo, Ben Cahoon, Kerry Watkins, S.J. Green, Jamel Richardson and Avon Cobourne were not in the lineup, but it will be interesting to see how the Alouettes respond after their major offensive core haven’t played since October 29.
