The Florida Panthers spent a significant amount of money on Friday.

They signed Tomas Fleischmann from Colorado, Ed Jovanovski from Phoenix, Scottie Upshall from Columbus and Jose Theodore from Minnesota.

Fleischmann spent half the season last year in Washington before being traded to Colorado for defenceman Scott Hannan in 2010-11. The Czech Republic native, who had 12 goals, and 19 assists in 2010-11, signed a four year deal worth $18 million.

Jovanovski, signed  a four year deal worth $16.5 million. The former Canadian Olympic Gold medallist returns to Florida where he started his career in 1995. Jovanovski had five goals and nine assists last year.

Upshall, from Fort McMurray, Alberta, shared his time last year with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Phoenix Coyotes, being traded to Columbus with Sami Lepisto for Rostislav Klesla and Dane Byers at the trade deadline. Upshall, who had a career high 22 goals in 2011, signed a four year deal worth $14 million.

NHL Trade Deadline Analysis

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Throughout the day, stay with www.anysportanytime.ca, for my analysis, and Jim’s analysis, on transactions that have taken place.

Here are the sixteen deals that have been made:

Atlanta trades Niclas Bergfors and Patrick Rissmiller to Florida for Radek Dvorak and a fifth round pick.

Analysis: I’m a little surprised in this one. I think Bergfors is the best player in the deal and better than Dvorak. With Atlanta in more playoff contention than Florida, I thought they wouldn’t get rid of him.  In 2010-11, Bergfors has 11 goals and 18 assists, compared to Dvorak’s 7 goals and 14 assists. Dvorak, who was a first line player in Florida, playing with David Booth and former Oiler Marty Reasoner, has not lived up to his potential this season and is on the downside of his career.

Kerrzy’s Notebook: D-Day Special

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Ahhhh, the NHL Trade Deadline.

Once a year you grace us with your presence, teasing us with the prospect of blockbuster deals and momentum shifting swaps all in the name of gearing up for the playoffs/next season (depending on how things have gone up to this point, of course).

It’s been kind of a funny lead up to the “big day” this time around with a number of fairly significant moves since early February, but you just never know what will happen! The aim of this feature will be to try and stay updated on the latest trades up to (and beyond) that 1pm deadline and provide a bit of my own insight into each move!

Let’s get right to it (despite several alarms set, I couldn’t actually get up before 10am this year)! (more…)
