This week on 15MOF we welcome the NHL back and we look at the preseason ranking that has the Edmonton Oilers remarkably high up. As well, we take a look at the storylines surrounding Ilya Kovalchuk, Brian Burke and Scott Gomez, and we recap the NFL playoff action from this past weekend.
In the GABBYs: Kate Upton, the Dallas Stars, the MLB, the MLB again, the NY Jets and Lubomir Visnovsky. The Punchline this week is Jose Canseco.
This week on the show, we look at the tragic death of former NFL star Junior Seau and the latest bounty suspensions from that league, as well as news from the NHL that Raffi Torres is appealing his lengthy suspension. We also look at the situation in the Nashville Predators camp, along with speculation that the NY Islanders might soon have a new home.
In the GABBYs: Leo Messi, Jose Mourinho, Jered Weaver, the NY Knicks, the Montreal Canadiens and Jeremy Affeldt. The Punchline this week is, once again, the Charlotte Bobcats!
This week on 15MOF, we’re talking coaching injuries in the NHL and long goal droughts (Scott Goalmez!), the NBA’s Tim Tebow and we discuss whether or not we will ever see the “super fight” between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao!
In the GABBYs: Paul Pierce & Kobe Bryant, Tomas Holmstrom & Nick Lidstrom, the Penticton Vees, Gisele Bundchen, Kevin Love and Tiquan Underwood. The Punchline this week is soccer player Adriano!
It was a long time coming, but Scott Gomez finally did it!
For the first time since February 5th, 2011, the Montreal Canadiens centre used the forward momentum of his hockey stick to direct the puck past the goaltender of an opposing NHL team, between the three red bars and into the net, a feat normally referred to in sports as a “goal.”
The Anchorage, Alaska, native went 54 game between goals (or 61 games if you count last year’s playoff loss to the Bruins) and had become the butt of many a joke in Montreal, where fans became so impatient with his lack of production that they actually celebrated the one-year anniversary of the last time he bulged the twine. Someone even launched a website to track his progress called “Did Gomez Score?”
As you can see, the site has been updated! FIND OUT WHY after the jump! (more…)
This week on 15 Minutes of Fame, we give a passing grade to the NHL’s All-Star Weekend, touch on Tim Thomas’ decision to skip his team’s White House visit and discuss the biggest surprises in the league at the All-Star break. As well: we give out our Super Bowl predictions and comment on a couple of massive MLB contracts!
In the GABBYs: The Canadian women’s soccer team, US Senator John Kerry, Jay Cutler, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Kyle Williams and Scott Gomez. The Punchline this week is Minnesota Vikings kicker Chris Kluwe!
I have now watched at least part of every game in the Stanley Cup Playoffs so far. Here are my comments after the first two games of action.
Thumbs up to the Pittsburgh Penguins for playing a very tight-checking affair in game one against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Tampa’s big three of Stamkos/LeCavalier/St. Louis had a combined total of eight shots. I didn’t think Dan Bylsma could continue his coaching magic into the playoffs. I was wrong.
The Boston Bruins absolutely annihilated the Montreal Canadiens 7-0 at the TD Garden in Bean town on Thursday night, the first time the division rivals met since the Zdeno Chara/Max Pacioretty incident.
Seems fitting then, that there would be another semi-questionable hit for us to talk about afterwards, doesn’t it?
A quick scan of the post game articles and comments from around the interweb doesn’t seem to show many mentions of a Brad Marchand hit on Scott Gomez in the third period, but it’s a hit that I’m sure the NHL will at least take another look at. With about 7:25 to go in what was then a 6-0 game, Marchand goes high on Gomez in the neutral zone, sending him flying and earning himself a roughing penalty. To me, it’s a hit that could easily be racked up as another headshot on Marchand’s resume and, given that he was just suspended for one, could easily result in another ban. (more…)
