Kerrzy’s Notebook: NHL to Scrap Fighting?

Friday, September 30th, 2011

Is fighting about to go the way of the red line in the National Hockey League?

With all the talk about headshots and concussions around pro sports these days, we all knew the topic was going to at least come up a few times. Add to that the fact that the league lost three ‘enforcer’ type players over the summer, and it became a perfect storm of sorts for the discussion to be had.

On one side of the debate, you’ve got the people who will argue that fighting is a part of the game and taking it out would just make the sport soft. Others will point out that the role of the enforcer is quickly evaporating and a lot of fights are pre-arranged and have little to no effect on the momentum of a game.

Both sides are right, to a certain extent: fighting is a pretty big part of the game, and has been for ages, but the game would probably be just fine without it.

The other layer to the argument is the one that the NHL is now looking into, and that is the injury side of the equation.

Brendan Shanahan, the NHL’s senior vice president of player safety, confirmed to the CBC on Thursday that they’ll be examining whether or not fighting still has a place in the game… (more…)

Kerrzy’s Notebook: Uptown Sports Slams Sean Avery

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

New York Rangers agitator Sean Avery is in the middle of some off-ice controversy this week, but it’s not what you might think!

No, he isn’t insulting an ex-girlfriend in the media or running his mouth about a fellow NHLer on a sports talk show. In fact, he actually hasn’t done anything wrong in this case. Believe it or not, Avery is on the receiving end of this one and it really has nothing to do with hockey.

The 31-year-old former Vogue intern teamed up with the Human Rights Campaign and released a 30-second video for “New Yorkers for Marriage Equality” over the weekend, where he came out in support of same-sex marriage. According to ESPN, Avery appears to be the first pro athlete in New York to join the campaign, which features videos from people like NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the daughter of George W. Bush and several politicians and celebrities.

While most of the initial feedback was positive, the vice president of a sports management agency that represents a handful of NHLers has ripped Avery, calling same-sex marriage “wrong” on the company’s official Twitter account! (more…)

Weekend Sports Recap– November 13-14

Jason Clermont (Bing Images)

This past weekend was a major example why the Canadian Football League can be considered better than the National Football League.

The B.C. Lions-Saskatchewan Roughriders battle in the Western Semi-Final yesterday from Mosaic Stadium was a thriller, highlighted by Jason Clermont’s overtime touchdown that put the Roughriders into the Western Final against the Calgary Stampeders. Clermont’s OT TD was his first of the season, and it became even more climactic because he spent his first seven seasons as a Lion before signing as a free agent with the Roughriders in December, 2008.
