Predators surprisingly match Flyers’ offer for Weber

Shea Weber (Sean Russell, Wikimedia Commons)

The Philadelphia Flyers think defenceman Shea Weber is great.

Apparently so do the Nashville Predators. On Tuesday the Predators re-signed Weber to a 14 year deal worth $110 million, matching the contract offer set by the Philadelphia Flyers last week.

Can Nashville really afford their prized defenceman? Who else can they afford to assist Weber as they move forward?

Last season Weber had 19 goals and 49 points, but will his numbers go down with the team losing Ryan Suter to the Minnesota Wild in the offseason?

Will the Predators be forced to rebuild and where will the money come from? Did Nashville make the right move also on Tuesday in announcing the re-signing of Colin Wilson and Sergei Kostitsyn? Wilson was re-signed to a three year contract worth $6 million.

Canadiens trade Kostitsyn to Predators

Monday, February 27th, 2012

Andrei Kostitsyn (Wikimedia Commons)

I literally feel like I am on cloud nine today folks! I not only predicted yesterday that Andrei Kostitsyn would be the most likely player traded today, but I also successfully predicted the team he would be traded to.

On Monday Kostitsyn was traded from the Montreal Canadiens to the Nashville Predators for a second and fifth round draft pick in 2013.

Andrei, will now get to join his brother Sergei. So far this season, Andrei has 12 goals and 12 assists in 53 games, but became expendable because he is an unrestricted free agent.

The Canadiens could have a very busy day today because their practice was cancelled.

This was the second move made between the Predators and Canadiens this year. On February 17, defenceman Hal Gill was traded from Montreal to Nashville with a draft pick for Blake Geoffrion, Robert Slaney and a draft pick.

Flames lose 5-3 to Predators

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

The Calgary Flames need to play a full three periods in order to win hockey games. On Sunday, they only played one and it was too little too late.

After trailing 1-0, the Nashville Predators scored two goals each in the first and second periods en route to a 5-3 win over the Flames.

It was a very strong game for Sergei Kostitsyn, who recorded a hat trick, including the game winning goal and the insurance marker into an empty net when the Flames were trying to make a strong comeback in the third period.

Flames captain Jarome Iginla scored his 499th career goal in the National Hockey League to open the scoring for Calgary, who lost their third straight game and are now two points back of the Dallas Stars for eighth place in the Western Conference.

After Iginla’s opening goal, Nashville scored four straight goals before the Flames got on the board again early in the third period.

The Flames next play in Washington on Tuesday. In other Flames news, defenceman Cory Sarich has been fined $2,500 for a hit to the head on Ottawa Senators winger Erik Condra in the Flames’ overtime loss to the Senators Friday night.
