NBA officiating error doesn’t help Raptors now

Friday, November 23rd, 2012

The Toronto Raptors are struggling on the court, and now they’re struggling in receiving cooperation from the National Basketball Association.

After Toronto’s 98-97 loss to Charlotte Wednesday, the NBA issued a statement that officials Ed Malloy, John Goble and Violet Palmer missed a foul by Bobcats’ forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist on Raptors’ center Andrea Bargnani with 2.4 seconds left. With the loss, the Raptors fell to 3-9 and are three games back of the Boston Celtics for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

What should the NBA do now? Should they allow the Raptors and Bobcats to replay the final 2.4 seconds with Bargnani given two free throws?

They have replayed a basketball game before. In fact four times, with the last coming in 2007 when Miami Heat all-star Shaquille O’Neal was mistakenly fouled out of a game against the Atlanta Hawks. The final 51.9 seconds was replayed three months later.

Controversy in Kings win over Blue Jackets

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

The hockey world is currently a buzz following Los Angeles’ 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Staples Center last night.

With a second left in the game last night, Kings’ defenceman Drew Doughty scored on the power play from Anze Kopitar and Jack Johnson to give the Kings a much needed victory in the Western Conference.

But on the replay, the clock stopped momentarily with 1.8 seconds left. With the clock malfunction occurring, the goal should not have counted, meaning the Kings got an extra point that they should not have necessarily deserved as of yet anyways.

According to NHL Executive Vice-President Colin Campbell, the game last night cannot be changed. Los Angeles will get two points in the standings and Columbus none. The result is meaningless for the Blue Jackets but huge for the Kings, who in seventh place in the Western Conference, enhance their lead on a playoff spot to six points over Dallas and Colorado.

But my argument is something can be done and the NHL should not rule by the letter of the law. In the NBA in 2008 , the final 52 seconds of the game played between the Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks was replayed because Shaquille O’Neal was mistakenly fouled out of the game.

The Kings play the Blue Jackets again this season on March 8, and in my opinion, the time leading up to the previous faceoff should be replayed at that time. What do you think?

Random Friday Thoughts: NBA Lockout, Riders to Celtics, Real Life Hot Wheels

CBA for the NBA?

The NBA’s championship series is all tied up after a couple of games in Miami…and if you’re a basketball fan, you should be glad!

That’s because the NBA and the players union appear to be a trophy presentation away from a lockout that could end up eating up part, or all of the 2011-12 season. By the time the Heat/Mavericks series is all over, we’ll be just a week or two away from an expired collective bargaining agreement and what could be a long summer for sports fans.

League commissioner David Stern said this week that it’s going to be “a challenge” to get a new deal signed in time to avoid a lockout.

The situation is pretty similar to the one that the NHL had back in 2004-05 and the one that the NFL is experiencing right now: basically, the owners say they’re losing money and they want the players to take a big pay cut and the players are saying no! (After the Jump: Will the Heat have to dismantle the Big Three? Prospect goes from the CFL to the NBA and some real life Hot Wheels action!) (more…)

Shaq retires at age 39

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Shaquille O'Neal (Steve Lipofsky, Wikimedia Commons)

One of the greatest basketball players in NBA history has decided to call it a career.

Shaquille O’Neal is one of the most remarkable basketball players I have seen. I would place him second on the list of the best basketball players to have played in the NBA since I first started watching in 1986, just behind Michael Jordan.

During his career, O’Neal won four NBA Championships, three consecutive titles with the Los Angeles Lakers from 2000-2002, and another with the Miami Heat in 2006.

A product of Louisiana State, O’Neal was 7’1″, 325 pounds, and during his prime one of the most intimidating centers the game has ever seen.

A first overall pick of the Orlando Magic, O’Neal singlehandedly led the Magic to their first three series wins and an Eastern Conference Championship in 1995 before being swept by the Houston Rockets.

NBA Finals Preview

Monday, May 30th, 2011

Dwyane Wade (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

Tomorrow night in Miami, the Miami Heat will host the Dallas Mavericks in Game One of the NBA Finals.

I’m thinking I should just stick to predicting hockey. I’m a remarkable 12-2 in predicting series in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and only 7-7 in the NBA Playoffs. That said, I’ll give a shot in analyzing the NBA Finals, with a prediction at the end.

The Heat knocked off the Chicago Bulls in five, and the Mavericks knocked out the Oklahoma City Thunder in five games as well.

The Mavericks were able to display a significant amount of poise and experience in knocking out the Thunder. Dirk Nowitzki, looking for his first NBA Title,  went on an offensive scoring string that was truly amazing. In any of the five games the Mavericks played, the least number of points Nowitzki scored was 18.

The Mavericks are also getting strong defense from Tyson Chandler, who is averaging 9.3 rebounds per game. He will have his work cut out for him big time however in an attempt to stop one of the Heat’s big three– Dwyane Wade, LeBron James or Chris Bosh. My guess it will probably be James because I expect Bosh will be used to regularly block Nowitzki.

Mavericks advance to NBA Finals

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

Dirk Nowitzki (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

The Dallas Mavericks could soon meet the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals again.

Wednesday night, the Mavericks did their part. Shawn Marion and Dirk Nowitzki each scored 26 points as the Mavericks defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 108-100.  Dallas won the Western Conference Finals 4-1.

Down by four heading into the fourth quarter, the Mavericks outscored the Thunder 28-20 in the final twelve minutes.

Down 94-92 with 1:14 remaining, Dirk Nowitzki scored a huge three-pointer to put Dallas up by one, and a lead they would not relinquish.

If the Mavericks are going to win the NBA Finals, I think Jason Terry needs to be in the starting lineup rather than coming off the bench. Last night he had 12 points to DeShawn Stevenson’s one.

Stevenson continues to get big minutes for the Mavericks even though he hasn’t been in double digits in scoring for any of Dallas’s postseason games.

The Chicago Bulls will try to continue their season tonight when they host the Miami Heat. The Heat lead the Eastern Conference Final 3-1.  Game time is 6:30pm Mountain on TSN.

Note: The Mavericks played the Heat in the 2006 NBA Finals with the Heat winning in six games. Dallas won the first two games before Miami stormed back to win the next four. The Heat were led by Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O’Neal.

Random Friday Thoughts: NHL Conference Finals, Celebration (still) Sidelines Morales

Preview: NHL Conference Finals

Only four teams remain in this year’s battle for Lord Stanley’s mug as we get set for the Conference Finals to begin this weekend.

In the West, the San Jose Sharks will travel to Vancouver to face the Presidents’ Trophy winning Canucks on Sunday, after avoiding a complete meltdown on Thursday with a game seven win over the Red Wings. The Canucks had a much easier time with the Nashville Predators in round two, though it did still take six games for them to finish the job. This will be an interesting series because, as good as both of these clubs are, there are still question marks next to certain aspects of each team’s game. (After the jump: Who wins this series? Plus, a preview of Boston/Tampa Bay and a costly celebration continues to cost the LA Angels!) (more…)

Terry delivers record performance as Mavericks shockingly sweep Lakers

Sunday, May 8th, 2011

Jason Terry (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

In one of the most remarkable four game sweeps in NBA history, the Dallas Mavericks shockingly swept the Los Angeles Lakers 4-0 to advance to the Western Conference Finals Sunday afternoon.

Jason Terry tied an NBA record for recording nine three pointers in one playoff game as Dallas trounced the Los Angeles Lakers 122-86. They will now either play the Oklahoma City Thunder or the Memphis Grizzlies. The Grizzlies lead that series 2-1.

The Dallas victory was remarkable because the Los Angeles Lakers are the two-time defending NBA Champions, and their coach Phil Jackson has won eleven NBA Championships.

Jackson might also have coached his final game in basketball. The 65 year-old from Deer Lodge, Montana  has been hinting retirement the last few months.

This is not the first time I have been stunned by a terrible playoff performance in a single series  by the Lakers however. In the 2004, the Detroit Pistons stunned the Lakers in winning the NBA Finals in five games. The Pistons, led by Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton and the Wallaces (Ben and Rasheed) knocked off a Laker team that had Shaquille O’Neal AND Kobe Bryant.

The Hoop & The Harm: Notes from the Hardcourt

Strange Times in Beantown

It’s been a funny season for the Boston Celtics so far.

Their 26-7 record leads the Eastern Conference, despite the massive run the Miami Heat have been on since late November. The Celtics have their own “Big Three” of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen to compete with the Wade/James/Bosh tandem of their conference rivals. So it’s been a good season on the court so far.

Off the court though, it’s a different story!

Lets start with Pierce – Celtics fans are upset this week after “The Truth” was hit with a $15,000 fine by the NBA for “throwing an object” into the stands in a recent win over the Pacers, the same game that saw him drink a fan’s water. According to ESPN (via Celtics Hub), the league won’t confirm what he threw, but it might have been his gum.

Pierce was subbed out after picking up his second foul with eight minutes left in the first quarter. A FoxSports feed of the game shows him taking his gum out of his mouth and giving it a flick as he passes the scorer’s table. It was nothing crazy, there was no big wind up or anything. Was that it? The NBA won’t say… (more…)

LeBron saga a bit familiar

Friday, July 9th, 2010

(AP Photo)

I’ve never been to Cleveland.

But I feel like I know it.

A working-class, mid-sized major North American city, where the winters are long. Reminds me a bit of Edmonton.

It’s also a town whose collective mood is directly tied to the success, or lack thereof, of its sports teams.

Sounds a lot like Edmonton.

So when NBA superstar LeBron James announced amid much fanfare Thursday that he was leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat, I couldn’t help but think of Wayne Gretzky’s departure from the Edmonton Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings nearly 22 years ago.
