Weekend Sports Preview–MLB Playoffs, NHL, NFL, CFL–October 15-16, 2011

Devan Dubnyk (Barry Gutierrez, Associated Press)

Heading into the weekend, there is one particular statistic that stands out to me over all the others.

After eight days in the NHL’s regular season, the Edmonton Oilers are tied with the Detroit Red Wings for the fewest goals allowed in the entire league! That’s right folks, the Oilers and Red Wings have only disallowed three goals each.

Oilers’ goaltenders Devan Dubnyk and Nikolai Khabibulin have actually only given up two regulation goals between them. Dubnyk gave up a softy to Kris Letang in the Oilers’ 2-1 shootout win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday, while Khabibulin gave up a regulation goal to Matt Cullen in Edmonton’s 2-1 shootout loss to Minnesota on Thursday.

On Saturday night, the Oilers will entertain the Vancouver Canucks at Rexall Place. They will have a tough time containing Daniel and Henrik Sedin though, who have combined for 114 points in 123 games in their career versus the Oilers. Game time is 8pm and can be seen on CBC.

Brewers pound their way to victory in NLCS

Prince Fielder (Barbara Moore, Wikimedia Commons)

The Milwaukee Brewers recorded six runs in the fifth inning en route to a 9-6 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in Game One of the National League Championship Series on Sunday.

Down 5-2, the Brewers recorded a League Championship Series record by collecting five extra base hits in one  inning. Prince Fielder and Yuniesky Betancourt each recorded two run home runs, while Jerry Hairston Jr., Jonathan Lucroy and Ryan Braun all doubled.

It was a subpar performance by Brewers’ starter Zack Grienke, who gave up six runs to the Cardinals in six innings, including a three run home run in the fourth inning by shortstop David Freese.

The Brewers have been criticized for their excessive celebrations. Other than Nyjer Morgan’s controversial comments after the Brewers victory over the Arizona Diamondacks when Jamie Campbell of Rogers Sportsnet needed to apologize, I haven’t had any problem with it.

Game two from Milwaukee is tonight. Two former Blue Jays will get the start for each team– Edwin Jackson for St. Louis and Shawn Marcum for Milwaukee. Marcum struggled mightily against the Diamondbacks in the NLDS, so it will be interesting to see if he can rebound.

Major League Baseball Preview–National League Central

In one of the most intriguing divisions in baseball, you have four teams that have a legitimate chance of winning the division, and two teams that don’t.

The Milwaukee Brewers haven’t won a division title since winning the American League East in 1982. Under the direction of General Manager Doug Melvin of Chatham, Ontario, this year is as good as any for the Brewers to win the division crown.

Milwaukee enters the year with an outstanding nucleus of strong pitching and hitting. Prince Fielder, son of former Blue Jay Cecil Fielder, had 30+ home runs for the fourth straight year (32). I would like to see Fielder’s batting average rise a little, as it was at .261 a year ago. Ryan Braun is showing baseball fans he is an elite outfielder. Last year he had a .304 batting average with 25 home runs and 103 runs batted in. The Brewers are also anxious to get right fielder Corey Hart back in the lineup (.283, 31 HR, 102 RBIs). He may not start the season because of a strained oblique muscle.

The Brewers also made a blockbuster deal with the Blue Jays in the offseason. They acquired starting pitcher Shawn Marcum from Toronto for second base prospect Brett Lawrie of Burnaby, British Columbia. They also made another huge deal with the Kansas City Royals, acquiring Zack Greinke, the 2009 American League Cy Young Winner. The question marks for Marcum and Greinke are their health. Greinke is starting the year on the disabled list with a broken rib while playing basketball in February, while Marcum missed the 2009 season with Tommy John Surgery. If they are healthy for the majority of the year, Milwaukee will have an outstanding 1-2-3 punch that will include last year’s ace Yovani Gallardo (14-7, 200 K, 3.84 ERA).
