The Los Angeles Kings have won their first Stanley Cup in franchise history.
Dustin Brown scored a goal and two assists as the Kings defeated the New Jersey Devils 6-1 to win the Stanley Cup Finals 4-2.
Now it is your turn. Please comment below what Los Angeles you are most happy for by winning the Stanley Cup.
Is it Darryl Sutter, who controversially was fired by the Calgary Flames after a solid run as Head Coach and General Manager?
Was it Dustin Penner, who signed a contract that many questioned in Edmonton, and flourished on the Kings second line with Mike Richards and Jeff Carter?
Was it Mike Richards, Simon Gagne and Drew Doughty who have now won an Olympic Gold medal and Stanley Cup?

As we near the end of the second month of the NHL season, we’re starting to separate the men from the boys and the pretenders from the real deals out there…but regardless of that, the beauty goals keep rolling in!
This week on the GOTW, we’ve got the answer to Tampa’s defensive tactics, another alley-oop, the old “dangle & snipe,” and two of the nicest goals you’ll see all season long! Oh, and the most embarrassing thing since…well I won’t spoil it!
Let’s go!
5. Patrik Elias
Remember when the Tampa Bay Lightning were getting raked over the coals for playing the 1-3-1 system against the Philadelphia Flyers? Check out Patrik Elias’ method of getting through the clogged ice on this NJ Devils power play! Pause the video at the 35-second mark: it’s a 2-on-4, and he still scores! (VIDEOS after the jump!) We’re almost a month into the new NHL season, and the beauty goals just keep on coming!
Last time, the goal of the week was a filthy little kick-and-tap by Phoenix’s Mikkel Boedker, but we’ve got a whole new set of snipes and dangles for your perusal! There is one familiar name on this list, and a couple that have been on the cusp in previous weeks…but enough talking, let’s go!
5. Simon Gagne
The NBA is in full lockout mode at the moment, but you wouldn’t know it if you were at the Staples Center this week! Check out this little alley-oop play from Anze Kopitar to Simon Gagne, who outwaits Brian Elliot and puts the biscuit in the basket…VIDEOS AFTER THE JUMP! (more…)

Simon Gagne (Wikimedia Commons)
The National Hockey League Season starts in one hour from now.
For the first time in hockey history I am predicting that the Stanley Cup is coming to Los Angeles.
I like the Kings’ nucleus of talent and their two key acquisitions– Simon Gagne from Tampa Bay and Mike Richards from Philadelphia. They also have two of the best young defencemen in the game in Drew Doughty and Jack Johnson and solid goaltending in Jonathan Quick.
I like how the Sabres improved their team as well in acquiring Ville Leino from Philadelphia and defencemen Christian Ehrhoff from Vancouver and Robyn Regehr from Calgary. They have excellent balance of youth and experience, plus outstanding goaltending in Ryan Miller.
In the west, I am predicting the Columbus Blue Jackets to make the playoffs over the Phoenix Coyotes. The loss of Ilya Bryzgalov to Philadelphia will be a huge blow for them, while the Blue Jackets got another sniper in Jeff Carter from Philadelphia.
In the east, I think it will now be the year that the Toronto Maple Leafs make the postseason. I am predicting them and the Carolina Hurricanes to make the playoffs over the Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Rangers.

Steven Stamkos (Wikimedia Commons)
He was the hottest restricted free agent on the market, but now Steven Stamkos will be a major part of the Tampa Bay Lightning offense for the next half a decade.
On Tuesday, the Lightning signed Stamkos to a five year deal worth $37.5 million. Since the start of the 2009-10 National Hockey League regular season, Stamkos has the most goals with 96.
After being tied with Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins for the most goals during the 2009-10 regular season with 51, Stamkos was second to only Hart Trophy Winner Corey Perry of the Anaheim Ducks in 2010-11 with 45 goals.
Stamkos was also fifth in 2010-11 in points with 91.
A centerman from Markham, Ontario, Stamkos was the first overall pick in the 2008 National Hockey League Entry Draft.
It looks like once again, he will share a significant amount of the Lightning’s offensive duties with Vincent LeCavalier and Martin St. Louis this season.
It will be interesting to see however how much the Lightning offense suffers with the loss of Simon Gagne to the Los Angeles Kings and Sean Bergenheim to the Florida Panthers.

Brad Richards (Wikimedia Commons)
At the end of the day Brad Richards decided to play for his old head coach rather than his old general manager.
Brad Richards is reuniting with John Tortorella on Broadway rather than Jay Feaster in Calgary.
Today the New York Rangers signed Richards from the Dallas Stars to a nine year deal worth $60 million. Richards won the Conn Smythe Trophy for the playoff’s most valuable player when he played for Tortorella and Feaster on the 2004 Stanley Cup Winning Tampa Bay Lightning that beat the Calgary Flames in seven dramatic games. It was reported by TSN’s Bob McKenzie last night that the Flames offered Richards a nine year deal worth $64 million.
Richards had 28 goals and 49 assists in 72 games for Dallas in 2010-11. It is a bit of an offensive decrease from his 91 points in 2009-10, but at the same time Richards was a +13 better this past year than he was the year before.

Mike Smith (Bridgette Samuels, Wikimedia Commons)
The Tampa Bay Lightning and the Boston Bruins are now even at two games apiece in the Eastern Conference Final.
Saturday morning in Tampa, the Lightning knocked off the Bruins 5-3. Simon Gagne scored the game winning goal for Tampa Bay at 6:54 of the third period from Ryan Malone.
Gagne had a goal, two assists, was a +4, with a shot, and a blocked shot in 14:58 of ice time.
Teddy Purcell also scored two goals for Tampa Bay.
The Lightning made a remarkable comeback in this hockey game. Down 3-0 after the first period on three giveaways, the Lightning regrouped nicely. One major reason was Guy Boucher’s decision to replace Dwayne Roloson with Mike Smith. You cannot blame Roloson for any of the three Boston goals, but the bottom line is Smith is clearly hotter than Roloson at the moment. In a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately industry, Smith has made 29 saves on 29 shots in the postseason so far, and that was after he won his final three starts in the regular season–two wins over the Carolina Hurricanes and a 2-0 shutout win in Chicago where he made 31 saves.

Chris Kunitz (Bing Images)
Two more players were suspended by the National Hockey League this afternoon.
Steve Downie of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Chris Kunitz of the Pittsburgh Penguins were suspended for separate incidents last night.
Downie was suspended for leaping at Penguin Ben Lovejoy at the end boards. Kunitz was suspended for elbowing Lightning forward Simon Gagne. Pittsburgh won 3-2 to take a 2-1 series lead.

Colin Campbell is a busy man these days!
The NHL’s head disciplinarian kicked off the 2011 playoffs by handing out a couple of early suspensions to LA’s Jarret Stoll (one game) and Anaheim’s Bobby Ryan (two games). He followed that up by deciding not to suspend Vancouver’s Raffi Torres for a controversial hit on Sunday night (even though Torres probably deserved at least a game or two), which drew the ire of the Chicago Blackhawks.
Well, after Monday night’s game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Tampa Bay Lightning, it looks like he’s got another couple of decisions to make! Tampa’s Steve Downie and Pittsburgh’s Chris Kunitz will both be hearing from the league on Tuesday, though my guess is that Kunitz will be the one facing a ban for his actions. (After the jump: Watch both incidents, plus an UPDATE on the situation) (more…)

Brayden Schenn (Wikimedia Commons)
Ok. It was only Norway, a team many believe should not have been at the World Junior Hockey Championships.
But Brayden Schenn of Saskatoon simply had one of those nights on Wednesday when everything he did was right. His four goal performance has only been matched twice by Team Canada in World Junior Hockey Championship history– 1983 by Mario Lemieux against Norway and 1999 by Simon Gagne against Kazakhstan.
Already down to 18 skaters because of injuries to Cody Eakin (hand), Calvin de Haan (lower body), Jaden Schwartz (knee) and a controversial suspension to Zack Kassian, Canada had to shorten its bench, but still came away with a commanding 10-1 blowout victory.
But, if you thought that a four goal performance by Schenn would be good enough for him to be named player of the game– you’re wrong. That honour went to defenceman Erik Gudbranson, who scored a pair of goals himself. The selection of Gudbranson over Schenn led TSN analyst Pierre McGuire to comment that the entire process for the player of the game award needed to be reviewed– a comment I agree with immensely.
