The Canadian Football League is continuing to have significant problems with British Columbia Lions defensive tackle Khalif Mitchell.
Mitchell, who was suspended earlier this season for hyperextending Edmonton Eskimo offensive lineman Simeon Rottier’s shoulder, was fined this week for making throat slashing gestures against the Edmonton Eskimos in the Lions’ 19-18 come from behind victory.
Mitchell’s actions this time around only got him a fine, where a second suspension should have been warranted.
Either way, in a puzzling situation of events, Mitchell will not play tomorrow night in Regina against the Saskatchewan Roughriders because of a thigh injury. And even when Mitchell returns, he will have to meet with head coach Mike Benevides, to make sure his completely inappropriate behaviour on the football field doesn’t continue.
As far as the Lions’ defense is concerned, they won’t miss a beat. Solomon Elimimian will return to the Lions after trying out with Minnesota and Cleveland.

Edmonton Eskimos General Manager Eric Tillman may soon have to make a major decision. That is what to do with three high profile running backs.
On Saturday the Eskimos learned the news that running back Jerome Messam was released by the Miami Dolphins. Messam will once again be property of the Eskimos if he doesn’t get picked up by another team in the next ten days.
If Messam joins the Eskimos, there is no way Eric Tillman should keep Messam, Hugh Charles and Cory Boyd who was recently acquired from the Toronto Argonauts. Three high profile running backs could give the Eskimos leverage in their need to find a quarterback to replace the struggling Steven Jyles.

One of the best defensive players in the Canadian Football League is going to see how things emerge in the National Football League.
On Thursday, Solomon Elimimian of the British Columbia Lions, one of the top linebackers in football over the last two years, signed a contract with the Minnesota Vikings.
Elimimian was second in the CFL last year with 98 tackles, seven behind Jerrell Freeman of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. But Elimimian was more impressive than Freeman, as the Lions defense gave up 97 fewer points than the last place Roughriders this past season.
If Elimimian makes the Vikings, he will be the latest CFL product under the tutelage of the great Wally Buono to have NFL success. He’ll join defensive specialist Cameron Wake of the Miami Dolphins, and quarterbacks Doug Flutie and Jeff Garcia.
Elimimian will also join former Lions wide receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux, who joined Minnesota last summer. Elimimian was the CFL’s Most Outstanding Rookie in 2010 and then won a Grey Cup with the Lions in 2011. The University of Hawaii product was also a CFL all-star this past season.
In other NFL news, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have named Greg Schiano head coach. Schiano most recently coached the University of Rutgers.

When the British Columbia Lions and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers take to the field tomorrow in Vancouver, the Lions will automatically be at a disadvantage.
Why? Well only two teams in my lifetime have won a Grey Cup when they have hosted the event– the 1977 Montreal Alouettes and the 1994 British Columbia Lions.
Oh and by the way nobody has won the Super Bowl on their home turf either, but the San Francisco 49ers did win Super Bowl XIX at the University of Stanford by a score of 38-16 over the Miami Dolphins in 1985.
Well in analyzing the game tomorrow most believe it is the Lions’ offense versus the Blue Bombers’ defense. Well, the Lions’ defense in my opinion, is underrated. Don’t forget, they 47 points fewer this season than Winnipeg.
Solomon Elimimian led the Lions with 98 tackles and will have to be guarded heavily by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers offensive line to give quarterback Buck Pierce time in the pocket and running back Chris Garrett the necessary rushing lanes.
I know the Lions at 11-7 had the better record than the Blue Bombers at 10-8. But something tells me Winnipeg will win, and the reason is the Grey Cup home field disadvantage.

The Edmonton Eskimos are only one win away from the 99th Grey Cup in Vancouver, British Columbia next weekend.
On Sunday, they will have to find a way to beat the Lions without star running back Jerome Messam. As I mentioned earlier in the week, I find the possibility of the Eskimos’ running game getting going is still there because the Lions’ defensive line and ability to stop the run has sometimes been a weakness, even with Solomon Elimimian and Brent Johnson leading the way.
But the Eskimos will need to find a way themselves to do a better job in stopping quarterback Travis Lulay, the Western Division nominee for the Canadian Football League’s most outstanding player award. In the Lions’ 29-20 win over Edmonton on October 29, Lulay had three touchdown passes for 322 yards.

Finally, the National Hockey League in Winnipeg returns this weekend as the Jets host the Montreal Canadiens at the MTS Center (Sunday, CBC, 3PM). When the Phoenix Coyotes moved to Winnipeg on July 1, 1996, Manitoba sports fans have been circling this date on their calendar. Fifteen years later and they finally have their wish. Players that will become household Jets’ names will include Andrew Ladd, Dustin Byfuglien, Bryan Little, Blake Wheeler and Evander Kane.
The Canadiens (0-1) meanwhile got off to a slow start as they lost 2-0 to the Toronto Maple Leafs Thursday night at the Air Canada Centre. James Reimer was brilliant in posting a shutout.

According to The Canadian Press, only a day after being named the CFL Player of the Week, Calgary Stampeders’ quarterback Henry Burris and wide receiver Johnny Forzani received more honours on Wednesday.
Burris was named the CFL’s best offensive player for August after leading the Stampeders to a 32-20 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, 45-35 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders and a 38-31 win over the Montreal Alouettes.
Overall, Burris completed 74 passes on 110 attempts for 1,061 yards, and seven touchdowns.
His touchdown to interception ratio was a perfect seven to zero.
Forzani, of Calgary, Alberta, was named the CFL Most Outstanding Canadian of the month after having ten catches for 225 yards and two touchdowns. He was dominant against the Alouettes, with 101 yards receiving with two touchdowns.
Solomon Elimimian of the British Columbia Lions was the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player and Sean Whyte of the Montreal Alouettes was the most outstanding player on Special Teams.
In other CFL news, the Montreal Alouettes announced that cornerback Mark Estelle is out for the season with a torn ligament in his left knee and the Edmonton Eskimos announced that center Aaron Fiacconi is out for the season with a torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder.

The Calgary Stampeders won their first game of the 2011 Canadian Football League regular season last night by defeating the British Columbia Lions 34-32.
After a defensive struggle in the first half, where the Stampeders clinged to a 7-6 first half lead, the offensive floodgates happened in the third quarter.
Calgary got three of the five touchdowns on the board, highlighted by a 61 yard strike from Henry Burris to Nik Lewis that put Calgary up 28-20.
The game came down to the wire however. With just over a minute remaining, Lions’ quarterback Travis Lulay had a five yard run into the end zone to pull B.C. within two, 34-32 Calgary. After a two point conversion failed, the Stampeders once again had the ball, but Henry Burris’s hand-off to Joffrey Reynolds was botched, allowing Lions’ linebacker Solomon Elimimian to recover the ball on the Lions’ 49 yard line. Then, on the final play of the game, a 55 yard field goal attempt by Paul McCallum was wide.

This is the time where the Canadian Football League takes center stage with two interesting semi-final match-ups.
First up is the Toronto Argonauts and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Eastern Division Semi-Final (Sunday, TSN, 11AM). Both teams finished the year at 9-9 with Hamilton sweeping the season series 3-0 by a combined total score of 74-28. The Ti-Cats are led by Eastern Division nominee for the Best Defensive Player, Markeith Knowlton, who led the CFL with six fumble returns. The Argonauts probably don’t have the advantage on offense or defense, but have a clear advantage on special teams where ex-Eskimo Noel Prefontaine handles the kicking duties and Chad Owens is the best punt returner in the CFL.
