The Los Angeles Kings are one win away from capturing their very first Stanley Cup. On Saturday night the Kings will play the New Jersey Devils (CBC, 6pm) leading the Finals 3-1.
The Devils meanwhile are taking a game-by-game approach according to all-star goaltender Martin Brodeur. In game four, the Devils had a solid third period and stayed alive with a 3-1 win. For the Devils to make the Stanley Cup Finals interesting, they will need a solid performance from Ilya Kovalchuk, who only has one goal in four games so far, and that one went into an empty net.
The Kings are getting great production from Drew Doughty, who leads all blueliners with 14 playof points.
One player though nobody is talking about is New Jersey’s defenceman Bryce Salvador who has 13 points. Just how unexpected has Salvador’s point production been? Well his NHL regular season career high came in 2009 when he had 16 points in 76 games!

When one says the “G” word right before the seventh game of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, many have to hold their breath.
However, according to the Calgary Sun, that is what exactly what Vancouver Canuck forward Daniel Sedin said on Wednesday, leading up to the biggest game within the National Hockey League of his career.
Don’t forget, Sedin is an Olympic Gold medallist with Sweden, from the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Torino, Italy, and one could argue that an Olympic Gold medal is bigger than a Stanley Cup, but that is up for debate at another time.
The bottom line is that Sedin said the dreaded “G” word today, and will have immense spotlight on him with Game Seven set to go in three and a half hours from now.
In other Stanley Cup Playoff news, Nathan Horton of the Boston Bruins, who suffered a concussion in game three if the Stanley Cup Finals on a hit from Aaron Rome, traveled with the team to Vancouver, but will not play.
Game seven is tonight at 6pm on CBC and NBC.

One of the greatest sporting events of the year will take place on Wednesday.
The seventh game of the Stanley Cup Final.
On Monday night, Mark Recchi recorded three assists as the Boston Bruins defeated the Vancouver Canucks 5-2 to force a seventh and deciding game.
It will be the first time since May 31, 1987 that a seventh and deciding game is played on Canadian soil. That year, in the greatest hockey game in the National Hockey League that was ever played, Jari Kurri scored the game winning goal for the Edmonton Oilers as they defeated the Philadelphia Flyers by a score of 3-1.
In game six Monday, the Bruins scored four times in 4:14. Canucks’ goaltender Roberto Luongo, who was pulled after the Bruins made it 3-0, gave up two very soft goals, one to Brad Marchand and the other to Milan Lucic. In the process he gave yup three goals on eight shots.
There were also some other interesting storylines in game six. Prior to the game, Bruins’ forward Shawn Thornton took a slapshot on Luongo from center ice. I’m not sure if it rattled Luongo at all, but CBC’s Don Cherry made an excellent point in the first intermission that Canucks went after Thornton whatsoever.

History could be made tonight if the Vancouver Canucks win the Stanley Cup.
For the first time in history a first time Stanley Cup champion could be awarded after a first time NBA Finals Champion in the same calendar year.
That has never happened before. Never.
It will, if the Vancouver Canucks win the Stanley Cup tonight.
Last night the Dallas Mavericks won their very first NBA Finals Championship when they beat the Miami Heat 4-2 with a 105-95 win in game six.
I like strange statistics just like this one. If any of you have a statistic they would like to share, please let us know at www.anysportanytime.ca.

The Vancouver Canucks host the Boston Bruins tonight in Game One of the Stanley Cup Finals.
Is it me, or has this become only the second biggest hockey story in Canada at the present time? It might be big in Vancouver but I think the rest of Canada is still buzzing with the news that the Atlanta Thrashers are moving to Winnipeg.
It would be interesting to see if yesterday’s developments will spark a rivalry between Vancouver and Winnipeg? I wonder how many Canucks fans are saying the following right now, “Great, our team is in the Finals and a Canadian team is hosting Game One of the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1993 and we cannot get any national focus! I can’t stand Winnipeg already!”
That said, it is now time to take a look at the Stanley Cup Final.

Nathan Horton (Bridget Samuels, Wikimedia Commons)
We now know who the Vancouver Canucks’ opponent will be in the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals.
Friday night in Boston, the Boston Bruins defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 1-0 in game seven of the Eastern Conference Final.
Nathan Horton scored the winner for the Bruins at 12:27 of the third period from David Krejci and Andrew Ference.
The goaltending in this hockey game was spectacular. Tim Thomas made 24 saves for the shutout and Dwayne Roloson made 37 saves.
But a remarkable part of this deciding game was how clean it was. According to Garry Galley of Hockey Night in Canada it was the first time in 21 years that there was no penalty called at all for a playoff game. And it is not that the referees just put away their whistles. I didn’t see any particular time when a penalty was even warranted.
The fact that there was no infraction called, definitely benefited the Bruins. The Lightning have shown throughout the playoffs they have an excellent power play. I also feel that the loss of Sean Bergenheim to an undisclosed injury significantly hurt the Lightning in Game 7 because he has shown offensive upside throughout the playoffs when Tampa Bay was at even strength.
Game One of the Stanley Cup Final between the Bruins and Canucks is Wednesday at 6pm from Vancouver on CBC and NBC.
