One of the more intriguing days on the hockey calendar takes place tomorrow. The National Hockey League Trade deadline takes place at 1pm Mountain tomorrow.

Here are is my list of the top ten players I am projecting to be traded:

10) Nikolai Khabibulin–Edmonton Oilers–Even though he is not an unrestricted free agent, the Oilers have Devan Dubnyk and Yann Danis to lead them until they are ready to be respectable. Neither are the long term answer, but a year at the status quo in net will give added heartburn for Oilers fans.

9) Kristian Huselius–Columbus Blue Jackets–The former Calgary Flame has only played two games this season and not since December 2 because of a groin injury but is expected back soon and could provide a contender with offensive depth.

8Steve Staios–New York Islanders–The former Edmonton Oiler and Calgary Flame is 38 years old and could provide a team with some steady presence on defence. Despite not having a goal, he has an impressive 104 blocked shots.

Flames re-sign Anton Babchuk

Monday, July 4th, 2011

Anton Babchuk (Wikimedia Commons)

The Calgary Flames have brought back one of their key defencemen from the 2010-11 National Hockey League season.

On Monday, the Flames announced that Anton Babchuk had signed a two year deal worth $5 million.

Last season, Babchuk had eleven goals and 24 assists in 82 games with the Carolina Hurricanes and Calgary Flames. He was traded to the Flames with checking right winger Tom Kostopoulos for defenceman Ian White and Brett Sutter on November 17.

It looks like the Flames got the better part of that deal.  Babchuk and Kostopoulos have become integral parts to the Flames’ hockey club, while White moved to San Jose and then Detroit.

It has been interesting that the Flames have been quiet compared to their provincial rivals, the Edmonton Oilers in signing unrestricted free agents from other teams.

That said, the Flames have been pretty successful in signing unrestricted free agents from their own 2010-11 roster. To date, they have re-signed goaltender Henrik Karlsson, and forwards Alex Tanguay and Curtis Glencross. The Dallas Stars signed defenceman Adam Pardy away from Calgary on Friday. Flames that remain unrestricted free agents are forwards Fredrik Modin and Brendan Morrison and defenceman Steve Staios.

Flames to be a buyer, not a seller

Jay Feaster (Bing Images)

A week ago, when I was in the Calgary Flames’ locker room at McMahon Stadium, I was in a scrum with Flames’ General Manager Jay Feaster.

Regarding today, he made it perfectly clear. The Calgary Flames were in a position to improve their hockey club this year, and were not considering selling their current talent for assets down the road.  At 6th place in the Western Conference, the Flames have 73 points, one back of Los Angeles for fifth, and leading Minnesota, Chicago, Dallas and Nashville by one point, and Anaheim by two points in the hotly contested Western Conference Standings.

Here are some significant statements Feaster made in the scrum:

“We’re not looking to negatively impact the chemistry in this room. As far as buying, if we could find the right players and we could do it at a price that makes sense, then we would do it. I’ve said we have to be careful about our deficit spending. It’s not going to be easy to do that, but we’ll see what happens between now and the deadline.”
