Adam Scott wins memorable Masters

Monday, April 15th, 2013

For the first time ever an Australian has won the most prestigious golf tournament in the world. On Sunday, Australia’s Adam Scott won the Masters by beating the Argentinian grandfather, Angel Cabrera, the 2009 Masters champion, in a memorable playoff.

Scott beat Cabrera by successfully executing two outstanding birdie putts. He forced a playoff by recording a birdie on the 72nd hole and then executed another birdie putt on the second hole (17th hole) of the playoff.

However the 2013 Masters will once again center around Tiger Woods. Questions remain whether or not Woods should have been disqualified for playing the ball two yards back from its original lie on Friday. There have also been reports that organizers might have kept Woods in the tournament because it would have significantly improved ratings. Either way, Woods’s  stature as the number one ranked golfer in the world, and the fame he brings to the game, probably made a significant difference in him being allowed to continue on the weekend.

Why is John Daly still getting sponsor’s exemptions?

Friday, November 11th, 2011

John Daly (Getty Images)

On Thursday at the Australian Open John Daly put six balls in the water on the eleventh hole and walked off the course. It’s interesting because I heard one report from TSN saying it was seven, but when you shoot more than five balls in the water on one hole, and have no interest in continuing your round, I’m not surprised if one would lose count thereafter.

Remarkably Daly already had a two stroke penalty on the tenth hole for shooting the wrong ball out of the bunker!

I could blog about the fact that Tiger Woods currently has a one stroke lead over Australian Peter O’Malley, or the fact that Woods doesn’t seem too fazed by Steve Williams’ inappropriate comments at the Caddies’ dinner last week at the World Golf Championships in Shanghai, China (won by German Martin Kaymer), but I find Daly’s performance much more interesting.

Why? Because I think there is some sort of attachment to Daly with the Everyman golfer. People have a connection with him. They pull for him constantly in loud cheers when things go right and deeply feel sorry for him when he experiences grief and sorrow (history of divorce and alcohol issues).

But the bottom line is, why is he still getting sponsor’s exemptions? Why is he taking a spot of a golfer that deserves a spot considerably more than he does? I understand the ratings issue, and when Daly is on his game, he drives ratings. But I also feel for those golfers who are on the brink of making the PGA Tour– the top prospects in the game–that are not getting the same opportunities because Daly’s personality is of high interest to the golf world.

Stricker leads PGA Championship

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Steve Stricker (Bing Images)

The golf world has been waiting a while for Steve Stricker to break through at a major.

On Thursday at the Atlanta Athletic Club it was Stricker’s time to shine.

The 44 year-old native of Edgerton, Wisconsin shot a dazzling 7-under 63 to take a two stroke lead on another Wisconsin native, Jerry Kelly of Madison after round one on Thursday.

Stricker has won twice already on tour this season– at the Memorial Tournament hosted by Jack Nicklaus in Ohio in June and at the John Deere Classic in Illinois in July.

The Atlanta Athletic Club played very easy for a major on Thursday. There were 22 players under par. It is interesting to compare the PGA Championship to the Canadian Open, where the lowest score posted by Sean O’Hair after four days at the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver was only -4. Stricker is at -7 already.

Scott wins WGC Bridgestone Invitational

Sunday, August 7th, 2011

Steve Williams (Bing Images)

Normally when a golfer wins a tournament, that is the major story of the tournament.

Not this week.

I know Adam Scott of Australia defeated the world’s number one Luke Donald of England and American Rickie Fowler, the 2010 PGA Rookie of the Year by four strokes after shooting a -17 and a 65 on Sunday, but the bigger news seemed to surround Scott’s caddie Steve Williams of New Zealand.

Williams, had won the WGC Bridgestone Invitational seven times previously with Tiger Woods and was his caddie for 13 of Woods’ 14 career major titles. But the WGC win this week had significant meaning for Williams, who was let go by Woods on July 20th.

In seeing and guiding Scott win this week, Williams told the great David Feherty of CBS Sports “I’ve been a caddie for 33 years and that was the best week of my life… I’ve had 145 wins now, and that was the best win I’ve ever had.”

Williams’s comments will now be analyzed significantly in the media, and will become a big story as we head to the PGA Championship. What is on everyone’s minds now is Tiger Woods’s reaction to Williams’ statements.

Weekend Sports Preview–August 6-7–CFL, World Golf Championship, MLB

Saturday, August 6th, 2011

Avon Cobourne (Bing Images)

Two teams above the .500 mark will take to the field Saturday night at McMahon Stadium in Calgary.

The Calgary Stampeders (3-2) will host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-2).

After a slow start, the Tiger-Cats have now won their last three games in convincing fashion, including a 34-26 win over the Grey Cup Champion Montreal Alouettes last week.

A major reason for Hamilton’s success has been the play of rookie wide receiver Chris Williams, who has 20 catches for 304 yards and three touchdowns and is a major reason why Arland Bruce III was expendable. Avon Cobourne has also been an offensive threat for the Tiger-Cats as he has 331 yards rushing and 142 yards receiving.

As for the Stampeders, they’re coming off a tight 22-18 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders. There’s no doubt that defensive tackle DeVone Claybrooks of East Carolina University is starting to feel very comfortable along the line of scrimmage.

The game can be seen on TSN Saturday night at 7:30pm.

Woods parts ways with Williams

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

Steve Williams (Bing Images)

It looks like caddie Steve Williams will be working significantly more with Australian golf star Adam Scott in the future.

On Wednesday, Tiger Woods parted ways with Williams, his caddie for the last twelve years. Over that time, Williams was on Woods’ bag for 13 of his 14 major titles.

Woods did not report who would replace Williams and when he was planning to return to golf. Williams, from New Zealand, had worked with Scott at the U.S. Open, British Open and AT&T National (third place finish) in 2011.

According to ESPN, Woods apparently approved of Williams’ request to caddie for Scott while he was hurt, but then later changed his mind.

Williams’ net worth is estimated at $20 million.

This is the second time in Woods’ career he has made a caddie change. Mike “Fluff” Cowan, had been Woods’ caddie from 1996-99 and was his caddie when he won his first major golf tournament in 1997 at the Masters. Woods apparently got rid of Cowan because according to the Washington Post, Cowan revealed the salary Woods paid him. Since 1999, Cowan has been Jim Furyk’s caddie.
