It appears Taylor Hall of the Edmonton Oilers is in Lindy Ruff’s doghouse at the World Hockey Championships in Stockholm, Sweden.
On Sunday, during Canada’s 3-2 shootout loss to Switzerland, Hall only saw 8:33 of ice time, and was primairly benched because of four turnovers her committed, according to Bruce McCurdy of the Edmonton Journal.
Hall’s spot alongside Oilers teammate Jordan Eberle and Matt Duchene of the Colorado Avalanche was taken by Matt Read of the Philadelphia Flyers.
Read scored for Canada early in the third period to put them up 2-1, but Switzerland tied the score with 6:46 left before winning the contest.
The 2013 World Men’s Hockey Championships will commence this weekend with Canada playing two games in Stockholm. The first will be against Denmark on Saturday (TSN, 8:00 a.m.) and the second will be against Switzerland on Sunday (TSN2, 8:00 a.m.).
There are four Oilers and one Flame on Team Canada. Jordan Eberle, Justin Schultz, Devan Dubnyk and Taylor Hall are the Oilers, while T.J. Brodie is the lone Calgary Flame.
Other notable players representing Team Canada are Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith, Carolina Hurricanes sniper Eric Staal, Florida Panthers defenceman Brian Campbell (defending Lady Byng winner) and Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos, who was second in the NHL in scoring with 29 goals and 57 points. Well you can say the Edmonton Oilers are taking a deep breath today. They finally beat Niklas Backstrom in Minnesota. Backstrom, who was 17-0 against the Oilers in Minnesota prior to Friday, was pulled late in the first period, after Corey Potter put the Oilers up 3-0. Edmonton then went on to win 6-1.
The Oilers won despite being outshot 39-17 by Minnesota. Their play was simply opportunistic. They registered goals on less than one third of their total shots.
Potter and Nail Yakupov scored two goals each for the Oilers, while Jordan Eberle and Taylor Hall had a goal and two assists each.
Jeff Petry meanwhile might have had his best game as an Oiler, as he went a +5.
This week on 15MOF we look at the up-and-down Edmonton Oilers as they flirt with a playoff spot, the NHL’s Winter Classic announcement and we make our NCAA national championship predictions.
In the GABBYs: Traded NHLers, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Prince Fielder, Mike Rice, Vuvuzela attacks and the Blue Jays. The Punchline this week is the LA Lakers!
This weekend is an extremely significant one when it comes to the history of Canadian tennis. Team Canada is tied 1-1 with Team Italy in the quarterfinals heading into a key doubles match today and two singles matches on Sunday.
This afternoon (Saturday, Sportsnet, 4:30 p.m., joined in progress) Daniel Nestor of Toronto and Vasek Pospisil of Vancouver will take on the Italian pair of Paolo Lorenzi and Daniele Braccaili. It will be interesting to see how much energy Pospisil has in the tank after he lost a five set marathon to Andreas Seppi on Friday afternoon. Canadian head coach Martin Laurendeau ridiculously went with Pospisil over Jesse Levine, who is overall a much better tennis player.
Sunday’s matches are right now Milos Raonic versus Seppi (Saturday, Sportsnet, 3:00 p.m.) followed by Pospisil versus Fabio Fognini.
Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:
The Edmonton Oilers are red hot. In fact, with five straight wins, they’re the hottest team in the Northwest Division. On Tuesday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome Taylor Hall scored one goal and four assists as the Oilers beat the Calgary Flames 8-2.
After believe it or not a slow start for the Oilers after Devan Dubnyk gave up two goals on the first two Flames shots to Matt Stajan, the Oilers tied the score before the end of the period and then scored three times each in the second and third period.
The Oilers, playing with a full lineup, also got two goals each from Jordan Eberle and Nail Yakupov, and a goal from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins who also had three assists.
The Edmonton Oilers are in a playoff chase with 13 games left in the regular season. On Monday night in Edmonton, it was no April Fool’s joke. The Oilers were the more opportunistic team in defeating their provincial rival, the Calgary Flames by a score of 4-1 at Rexall Place.
Rookie defenceman Justin Schultz led the Oilers in scoring with a goal and two assists, while Taylor Hall, Ryan Jones and Nail Yakupov each had a goal and an assist in recording multi-point games themselves.
Like Saturday night in their win over Vancouver, the Oilers got off to a great start by scoring on three of their first five shots.
A week ago when you thought that the Edmonton Oilers might have got themselves out of the Western Conference playoff hunt, they have played outstanding hockey over the last three games.
Saturday night at Rexall Place, it was the Taylor Hall show for the first eight minutes and after that the Oilers did not need to do anything more offensively as Edmonton shut out Vancouver 4-0.
Hall set an Oilers record for the fastest hat trick to start a hockey game. He had a hat trick by the 7:53 mark of the first period. Wayne Gretzky, the greatest athlete of all-time, had the previous Oiler record. Gretzky had a hat trick by the 12:38 mark of the first period against the Quebec Nordiques in a 5-3 Edmonton win in 1986.
This week on our Yeggie-nominated show we take a look at what’s happening lately with the Edmonton Oilers (including a trade for some grit), the Chicago Blackhawks continue to take the league by storm and there’s some rock controversy at the Brier.
In the GABBYs: Anderson Silva, Swansea City, Jim Kerr, Rick DiPietro, Grambling State and Will Ohman. The Punchline this week is Ottawa’s NBL team!
This week on the show we look at the importance of a long road trip for the Edmonton Oilers & the suspension to Taylor Hall, a historic showing for Danica Patrick at the Daytona 500 and a big night for Ronda Rousey at UFC 157.
In the GABBYs: Leo Messi, the Chicago Blackhawks, Rick DiPietro, Oscar Pistorius, Matt Dalton and Susquehanna University. The Punchline this week is Carl Pavano and Francisco Liriano!
The Edmonton Oilers had a record performance Saturday night in a 6-4 win over the Colorado Avalanche.
The Oilers recorded a club record 56 shots on goal against the Avalanche, breaking a record of 55 shots set on March 21, 1986. The Oilers were once down 3-0 and 4-1 in the game, but marched back scoring five unanswered goals.
If memory serves me right there was a remarkable comeback by the Oilers that night in 1986 as well. Minnesota was once up 4-1, I believe, before the Oilers marched back.
Taylor Hall had eight scoring chances, while Jordan Eberle had seven. According to Kevin Weekes of Hockey Night in Canada, the Oilers had 83 shots during the game.
This week on the show we talk about some big news from the Edmonton Eskimos and examine their chances in the playoffs, and we discuss the latest CBA news and look at how the young guns of the Edmonton Oilers are doing down in OKC. As well, some UFC talk with a possible women’s division and two more failed drug tests after UFC 153.
In the GABBYs: Justin Schultz, JC Sherritt, Jon Cornish, Luis Suarez, Lance Armstrong, soccer fans and the Chomutov Pirates.
This week on the show we look at what has stalled talks between the NHL and the NHLPA, the Taylor Hall & Jordan Eberle contracts, a recap of the Labour Day Classic between the Eskimos & the Stampeders, an interesting story from the Paralympics and the Stephen Strasburg situation in the MLB.
In the GABBYs: EA Sports, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Joey Chestnut, Penn State, the Little League World Series and Charl Schwartzel. The Punchline this week is the Toronto Maple Leafs!
During a time when the 2012-13 NHL season is in the balance and no one knows when it will actually get under way, the Edmonton Oilers made the announcement Thursday that they have signed Jordan Eberle to a six year contract extension worth $36 million.
Last season Eberle had 34 goals and 42 assists in 78 games played.
This was the second significant signing for the Oilers in the last week. This past Wednesday, the Oilers signed Taylor Hall to a seven year deal worth $42 million.
What are your thoughts of the Oilers signing Hall and Eberle to long term deals? Are you hesitant of giving the two identical contracts in terms of the amount even though it appears Eberle has been more productive over the first two years than Hall? Are you concerned that Hall may not have what it takes to play a full 82 game season? Are you concerned that the Oilers are spending too much on Hall and Eberle right now, and won’t have enough in the bank three years from now to sign Schultz, Yakupov, Nugent-Hopkins and a goaltender?
