Oilers trade Gilbert to Wild for Schultz

Monday, February 27th, 2012

The Edmonton Oilers made an attempt to get tougher on their blueline with the acquisition of Nick Schultz from the Minnesota Wild for fellow blueliner Tom Gilbert.

Gilbert, who is from Minneapolis, Minnesota has three goals and 14 assists in 47 games with the Oilers this season. In six seasons with Edmonton, he has 33 goals and 125 assists and is a career -29.

Schultz, meanwhile, has been with the Wild for the last ten seasons. He doesn’t have the offensive skill as Gilbert, but is known as more of a stay-at-home defenceman, something the Oilers desperately need. He only has 128 points in 743 games in his career, but is more physical and experienced in the NHL than Gilbert.

The other factor that seems to be in the Oilers factor here is the injury factor. Schultz has missed much fewer games in his career than Gilbert.

The Oilers might also have Schultz in their lineup tonight as it is not that far from Minnesota to Winnipeg.

Carcillo suspended for hit on Gilbert

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

The National Hockey League has suspended Chicago Blackhawks’ enforcer Danny Carcillo seven games for hitting Edmonton Oilers’ defenceman Tom Gilbert from behind on Monday night.

Carcillo received a five minute major boarding penalty and a game misconduct. The Oilers scored two power play goals with the five minute man advantage en route to a 4-3 win.

It is the Oilers’ only victory on their seven game road trip, that is extended because of the World Junior Hockey Championships.

This is the tenth time in his career that Carcillo has been either fined or suspended. This time he will lose over $66,000.

Gilbert injured his knee on the play and has not yet returned to the Oilers lineup. Rookie and Calder Trophy favourite Ryan Nugent-Hopkins injured his shoulder in the Oilers win over Chicago Monday when he caught an edge and slid awkwardly into the boards. He seems to be day-to-day right now.

The Oilers play the St. Louis Blues this evening after losing 4-3 to Buffalo on Tuesday night.

Jones scores first career hat trick in Oilers win

Saturday, December 3rd, 2011

Ryan Jones (Wikimedia Commons)

Ryan Jones recorded his first career hat trick Friday night as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-3.

Down 2-1 heading into the third period, the Oilers scored five third period goals to get back into the Western Conference playoff race. At 29 points, the Oilers are tied for seventh place with the San Jose Sharks, Phoenix Coyotes and the Vancouver Canucks.

Other Oilers with multi-point games were Ales Hemsky (one goal and one assist), while Tom Gilbert, Shawn Horcoff and Ryan Smyth all had two assists each.

Jones was very lucky in the first period not to get a high sticking penalty on Blue Jackets’ defenceman James Wisniewski. The veteran American defenceman lost his tooth and had significant blood on his upper lip.

Another area of tonight’s game I was very impressed with was Darcy Hordichuk, who took on Jared Boll, one of the toughest players in the NHL and knocked him down.

The Oilers now host the Calgary Flames tomorrow night.

Oilers dominate Blackhawks 9-2

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (Wikimedia Commons)

Apparently the Chicago Blackhawks are the best team in the Western Conference.

I guess the Edmonton Oilers or Calgary Flames didn’t get the memo.

On Saturday night, the Oilers started as the Flames left off Friday night, dominating the Blackhawks in every capacity possible.

For the first time since 1992, the Oilers scored nine times in a game, in an amazing 9-2 victory over Chicago at Rexall Place.

It will take me a little while to go through all the Oilers that dominated the game offensively. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had five assists. Taylor Hall notched a hat trick. Tom Gilbert and Jordan Eberle each had a goal and three assists. Shawn Horcoff had a goal and two assists, and Jeff Petry had three assists.

The Oilers’ offensive explosion put a stop to the team’s four game losing streak and put them back into a playoff spot in the Western Conference at 10-7-2, tied with the St. Louis Blues for seventh.

The Oilers also had remarkable defensive performances from Theo Peckham and Petry, who were each a +5. With the long term ankle injuries to Cam Barker and Corey Potter, Peckham and Petry will be counted on substantially.

The next game for the Oilers is Monday in Dallas. Like the Oilers, the Stars have struggled lately after a quick start, and have lost five straight themselves. The loss of Alex Goligoski, who is out a month with a broken thumb, is a significant loss for the Stars.

Oilers win, Flames lose Tuesday night

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

Is it a correct assessment early in the season to say that the Edmonton Oilers are a much better hockey team than their southern provincial rivals in Calgary?

So far, it sure likes that is a genuine correct statement.

The Edmonton Oilers rebounded after a tough loss Saturday in Phoenix with a dominant 3-1 victory Tuesday in Montreal.

In a gritty effort, the Oilers came away with two points despite being out shot 29-13. After a scoreless first period, the Oilers’ penalty killing went to work as they killed off four Montreal power plays and even had the opportunity to put the puck past Carey Price via the services on Ryan Jones who recorded a shorthanded marker.

Tom Gilbert scored the game winning goal with 3:32 left, and Ryan Smyth followed with an empty netter. With the win, the Oilers improve to 9-3-2.

The Flames meanwhile lost 3-0 to Minnesota and fell to 6-6-1. Wild goaltender Nicklas Backstrom made 41 saves in recording the shutout.

Oilers call up Teubert

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

Colten Teubert (Wikimedia Commons)

The Edmonton Oilers feel their time is now to call up defenceman Colten Teubert.

Teubert, 21, was traded from Los Angeles to Edmonton with a first round pick in 2011 and a second round pick in 2012 for Dustin Penner on February 28.

A primary reason fort the call-up of Teubert was due to the suspension of Andy Sutton (five games for a hit on Avalanche rookie Gabriel Landeskog), the knee injury to Ryan Whitney, that will keep him out of the lineup for two more weeks and the recent shoulder issue for Cam Barker.

Teubert’s call-up came as minimal surprise after the team sent down Alex Plante back to Oklahoma City yesterday.

Teubert will be joining an Oilers’ defense that is playing exceptionally well. Corey Potter currently has seven points in nine games. Tom Gilbert and Ladislav Smid are providing veteran leadership. Jeff Petry is showing great skill with nine blocked shots in four games, and Theo Peckham is making his physical presence felt night in and night out.

With the call up of Teubert, the Oilers sent Linus Omark back down to the American Hockey League.

One thing Teubert brings with him to Edmonton is an understanding of what it takes to win. He was part of the Canadian National Junior Team blueline that won the Gold medal at the 2009 World Junior Hockey Championships in Ottawa.

Flames beat Oilers 2-1

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Miikka Kiprusoff (James Teterenko, Wikimedia Commons)

In a strong defensive effort, the Calgary Flames defeated the Edmonton Oilers at the Scotiabank Saddledome 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Flames that were able to put the puck past Oilers’ goaltender Devan Dubnyk were Flames’ defenceman Jay Bouwmeester and left winger Alex Tanguay.

Before the game, the Flames paid tribute to goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff. The Finnish veteran passed Mike Vernon last Thursday night as the Flames’ all-time leader in wins with 263.

The Flames scored their goals with six minutes remaining in regulation. Edmonton got their lone goal of the hockey game from defenceman Tom Gilbert.

The Flames improve to 2-3, while the Oilers drop to 2-2-1.

Taylor Hall, the Oilers’ number one pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft did not play because of flu-like symptoms.

Brendan Morrison of the Calgary Flames and Ryan Whitney of the Edmonton Oilers both made their 2011-12 debut on Tuesday night. Morrison had been out since tearing his ACL in March, while Whitney had been out since December 30 with an ankle injury.
