Karl resigns from Nuggets

Thursday, June 6th, 2013

George Karl (David Herrera, Wikimedia Commons)

Could George Karl be coming to Toronto? There is actually a high possibility.

On Wednesday Karl announced his resignation with the Denver Nuggets, and it is only natural to think he could be on the sidelines with the Raptors next season.

Ok. Dwane Casey is still the Raptors coach. But wih Karl, Lionel Hollins and Vinny Del Negro on the market, it is ridiculous for one to think that Casey is in the same calibre of coaches as those three mentioned.

Karl is the reigning coach of  the year in the NBA. He did remarkable things with little to work with in Denver. He has made the playoffs only once since 1992, and has an outstanding regular season record of 1131-756. Oh yes. And he has close ties to the Raptors GM Masai Ujuri who was the NBA Executive of the Year last year in Denver.

It is simply Ujuri’s time to shine. He needs to fire Casey this week and go after Karl!

Pacers force game seven with the Heat

Sunday, June 2nd, 2013

The Indiana Pacers will have a lot of sports fans rooting for them Monday night when they take on the big, bad Miami Heat in south Florida.

The Pacers played an exceptional game Saturday night in defeating the Heat 91-77. For the second consecutive game in the series, the team that won the game dominated the third quarter. On Saturday, it was Indiana, who outscored Miami 29-15.

Paul George led the Pacers attack with 28 points, while Roy Hibbert had 24 points and 11 rebounds.

In other NBA  news, the Toronto Raptors have finally named Masai Ujuri as their general manager. Ujiri was the NBA Executive of the Year this  year while with the Denver Nuggets. Ujiri was highly credited for the Carmelo Anthony blockbuster with the New York Knicks, and maintaining the Nuggets success despite the trade. This past season, Denver was 57-25 without any legtimate star players.

Clippers dumb decision could be Raptors gain

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013

Vinny Del Negro (KeIth Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

Despite leading the Los Angeles Clippers to 56 wins this season, it appears the Clippers do not plan to bring back their head coach Vinny Del Negro in 2013-14.

According to a report by Yahoo! Sports on Tuesday, Del Negro will not be offered a contract.  Quite simply, the Clippers are making a decision they are notorious for making throughout the history of their franchise–a decision that sets them considerably back rather than forward. Apparently just finishing 30 games above .500 during the regular season is not good enough to keep your job.

There is no question that Del Negro is the best coaching candidate on the market right now and the Raptors to get him, they will have to act fast.

Today the Raptors announced that general manager Bryan Colangelo will no longer make basketball decisions and named him team president. New Chief Executive Officer Tim Leiweke now has the responsibility to find a new general manager. However the decision may have to come sooner rather than later if it means bringing in Del Negro and firing Dwayne Casey.

Wizards shock Raptors 90-84

Tuesday, February 26th, 2013

Bradley Beal (Joseph Glorioso, Wikimedia Commons)

Just as it appeared the Toronto Raptors were starting to get some mojo on the court, they were shocked by the Washington Wizards Monday night at the Air Canada Centre.

Rookie shooting guard Bradley Beal, the Wizards first round pick out of the University of Florida, scored 20 points as Washington defeated Toronto 90-84.

But from a Raptors perspective, it was a very disappointing defeat. Some as soon they seemed to turn the corner in winning six of seven games, they lose to the worst road team in the NBA.

Rudy Gay, the new Toronto Raptor who was acquired from the Memphis Grizzlies on January 30, only scored seven points and only made one of eleven attempted field goals. Simply not good enough against a team that only won its fifth road game all season long.

Raptors acquire Gay from Grizzlies

Thursday, January 31st, 2013

In a head scratching deal, the Toronto Raptors have acquired forward Rudy Gay from the Memphis Grizzlies in a blockbuster trade also involving the Detroit Pistons.

Gay, was the Grizzlies leading scorer (17.2 points per game) on a team that was fourth in the Western Conference at 29-15.

Gay was traded from Memphis to Toronto with Hamed Haddadi for Jose Calderon and Ed Davis. The Grizzlies then traded Calderon to Detroit for Tayshaun Prince and Austin Daye.

By the Raptors acquiring a proven scorer, General Manager Bryan Colangelo is not giving up just yet on the 2013 season and is trying to tell fans they can still make a push at the Boston Celtics, even though they are 6.5 games back of them for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Ross shining in Toronto

Thursday, January 3rd, 2013

There is no doubt that Toronto Raptors’ General Manager Bryan Colangelo received some criticism in the summer when they selected Terrence Ross out of the University of Washington  with the eighth overall pick in front of the sexier selections such as Austin Rivers, Jeremy Lamb and Tyler Zeller, who attended the big name schools of Duke, Connecticut and North Carolina respectively.

But you can now understand Colangelo’s rationale from the performances of Ross lately.

Last night, Ross was sensational, scoring 26 points, including a remarkable buzzer beater for three points at the end of the second quarter, to give the Toronto Raptors a 102-79 win over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Raptors streak gets them back into playoff hunt

Tuesday, January 1st, 2013

DeMar DeRozan (Wikimedia Commons)

The Toronto Raptors all of a sudden have got themselves back into the chase in the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

The club is red hot, having won seven of eight games to complete the 2012 calendar year. The 123-88 hammering over the Orlando Magic was extremely impressive Saturday night, because the Raptors were playing their second game of a back-to-back and needing overtime to defeat the New Orleans Hornets 104-97 just the night before.

Another reason for the Raptors victory Saturday in Orlando was their complete team effort. Six players reached double digits, led by DeMar DeRozan’s 21 points.

I also really like the Raptors point guard position at the moment. The combination of Kyle Lowry and Jose Calderon sharing the time is definitely working.

NBA officiating error doesn’t help Raptors now

Friday, November 23rd, 2012

The Toronto Raptors are struggling on the court, and now they’re struggling in receiving cooperation from the National Basketball Association.

After Toronto’s 98-97 loss to Charlotte Wednesday, the NBA issued a statement that officials Ed Malloy, John Goble and Violet Palmer missed a foul by Bobcats’ forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist on Raptors’ center Andrea Bargnani with 2.4 seconds left. With the loss, the Raptors fell to 3-9 and are three games back of the Boston Celtics for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

What should the NBA do now? Should they allow the Raptors and Bobcats to replay the final 2.4 seconds with Bargnani given two free throws?

They have replayed a basketball game before. In fact four times, with the last coming in 2007 when Miami Heat all-star Shaquille O’Neal was mistakenly fouled out of a game against the Atlanta Hawks. The final 51.9 seconds was replayed three months later.

Weekend Sports Preview–November 17 & 18–CFL, NFL, CIS, NCAA & NBA

Friday, November 16th, 2012

Once again this weekend I’ll be watching four kinds of football from both side of the border.

Th most interesting matchup will be the Western Final on Sunday afternoon between the Calgary Stampeders (12-6) and the British Columbia Lions (13-5) (2:30pm, TSN). This week there has been more drama in the Stampeders’ dressing room than an entire week of the Young and the Restless, and for that I give the Lions the advantage.

Travis Lulay is expected to be at the top of his game and the Lions are well rested. My only concern however is that it has been a while since they played a very meaningful game, so it will be interesting to see how they come out mentally.

Raptors get lucky in win over Pacers

Wednesday, November 14th, 2012

Jose Calderon (Bree Bailey, Wikimedia Commons)

The Toronto Raptors simply won ugly Tuesday night in Indiana.

The Raptors set a record for the fewest points in the fourth quarter for a winning team since the institution of the shot clock in 1955 during a 74-72 win over the Pacers.

Despite the offensive absence, there were  a few good things for Toronto. First and foremost, their defense was admirable. To limit a team in the National Basketball Association to only 72 points on the second game of a back-to-back is solid work to say the very least.

It was also a career game for point guard Jose Calderon, who stepped up big time with the absence of Kyle Lowry who is out with an ankle injury. For the first time in Calderon’s career, he had a triple double (13 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds).

Sure, there are things the team needs to work on. As a first overall pick, Andrea Bargnani simply needs to score more points than eight. But the franchise is hopefully moving in the right direction after a lousy 1-6 start.

Raptors should be in tough again tonight

Tuesday, November 13th, 2012

The Toronto Raptors lost a devastating basketball game Monday night at the Air Canada Centre.

Despite having a 97-86 lead with seven minutes remaining, the Raptors lost 140-133 in triple overtime to the Utah Jazz.

Jazz center Al Jefferson made a three point shot with two seconds remaining in regulation to give Utah the 104-104 tie. Don’t criticize Raptors’ coach Dwane Casey too much though for leaving Jefferson open. Jefferson only made one shot from beyond the arc in 61 games last season.

In the first overtime, Jefferson made a huge shot to tie the score at 115, and then in the second overtime, John Lucas tied the score at 125 with a brilliant three point shot of his own.

Weekend Sports Preview–November 10 & 11–CFL, CIS, NCAA, NFL & NBA

Saturday, November 10th, 2012

I will be watching four kinds of football this weekend–the professional and collegiate variety from both sides of the border.

Obviously the biggest games are the Canadian Football League’s divisional semi-finals.

In the East, the Toronto Argonauts are hosting the Edmonton Eskimos (Sunday, 11am, TSN)  in a game that is featuring former Eskimo Ricky Ray, now at quarterback for Toronto. The Eskimos finished the season at 7-11 and the Argonauts at 9-9. However Edmonton did beat Toronto in both meetings this year, 19-15 on June 30 and 26-17 on August 27.

Early NBA injuries could hurt Lakers and Raptors

Wednesday, November 7th, 2012

Steve Nash (Richard Burdett, Wikimedia Commons)

It is clear that the point guard position is the most important position in basketball.

Over the next while the Toronto Raptors and Los Angeles Lakers will be without their players at the 1 position.

In Los Angeles, it appears Steve Nash of Victoria, British Columbia (the greatest Canadian basketball player ever) will be out of the Lakers lineup for a longer period of time than expected. In last week 116-106 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, Nash injured his leg and was expected to be out a week. Now, according to lakernation.com, Nash has a  fracture in his fibula and could be out a month.

While in Toronto, the news got just as dim for Raptors’ point guard Kyle Lowry last night with an ankle injury. That will mean Jose Calderon will be counted on big time for the Raptors in Lowry’s absence.

Early in the NBA season, there are three teams undefeated– the 4-0 San Antonio Spurs, the 3-0 New York Knicks and 2-0 Milwaukee Bucks.

Weekend Sports Preview–November 3 & 4–NFL, CIS, NCAA, NBA, World Golf Championship

Saturday, November 3rd, 2012

The most dominant football team in Alberta is not in the Canadian Football League, but in Canadian Interuniversity Sport. On Saturday night at McMahon Stadium, the University of Calgary Dinos (7-1) will host the University of Manitoba in the Hardy Cup semi-final (Saturday, SHAW TV, 5pm).

Quarterback Eric Dzwilewski of Boise, Idaho set a Canada West Conference record with a 70.6 completion percentage, and helped set team records for most points, touchdowns, first downs, passing yards, completions and total yards of offense in 2012.
