Sunday, April 28th, 2013

The Calgary Roughnecks have advanced to the National Lacrosse League west division final after a 15-10 win over the Colorado Mammoth in the west division semi-final at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday night.

Forward and transition player Jeff Shattler of Edmonton, Alberta led the Roughnecks in scoring with three goals and four assists. Shattler also led both teams with ten shots on goal.

The first half was even with the score tied at 7 heading into the break, but the Roughnecks dominated the third quarter. They outscored Colorado 4-0, thanks to two shorthanded goals (one by Shattler and the other from Scott Ranger).

Bob Watson (Bing Images)

You might not have heard of Bob Watson.

He’s an Ontario police officer with the Waterloo Police Service.

On Sunday, he finished his athletic career in sports as the greatest goaltender in the history of lacrosse.

The Toronto Rock defeated the Washington Stealth 8-7 in the Champion’s Cup Final. For the second time of his career, Watson that was named Champion’s Cup MVP.

It was also Watson’s sixth Champion’s Cup, having previously won in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2005.

On Sunday, the Rock dominated the first half, while the Stealth dominated the second. In the end, Toronto hung on to win by a single point.

The Rock were significantly faster in their transition to offense than the Stealth, especially in the first half, where they took a 7-1 lead.

Washington roared back to pull within one, when the Rock got a critical insurance goal by Stephan Leblanc to put Toronto up by two.

Toronto had revenge on their side as it was Washington that defeated them to win the 2010 Champion’s Cup in Everett, Washington last year.

Ryan Kesler (Bing Images)

A jammed packed weekend of sports takes this weekend. The Vancouver Canucks will host the San Jose Sharks in game one of the Western Conference Final (Sunday, 6pm, CBC).

This is the first Western Conference Final for the Canucks since they went to the Stanley Cup Final in 1994 and lost to the New York Rangers in seven games. But it is interesting that the Canucks’ playoff most valuable player is a Yankee. Ryan Kesler leads all players in the playoffs with 15 points. He also leads the Canucks in the playoffs in +/- with a +6, power play goals (3), short handed assists (1) and game winning goals (2).

Question/Answer

Remember that Allen Iverson guy?

The last we heard from The Answer, he was off to Istanbul to suit up for Besiktas Cola Turka of the Turkish Basketball League after not getting any looks from NBA clubs. Aside from the name recognition, it doesn’t sound like he has done a whole lot for his new team, but he’s back in the headlines this week!

An alleged Iverson tweet has the basketball world talking, specifically fans of Australia’s Sydney Kings. I say “alleged” because no one is quite sure that the entire thing isn’t completely fabricated…

Australia’s The Daily Telegraph reported this week that AI had this to say on his Twitter account: “I am very happy here in Istanbul, but if I don’t return to the NBA I am considering a move to Australia after my two-year contract is up. I hear Sydney is a real good city to live in. My boy Rodney asked me to come over. I am comin!” (more…)
