Weekend Sports Preview–November 17 & 18–CFL, NFL, CIS, NCAA & NBA

Friday, November 16th, 2012

Once again this weekend I’ll be watching four kinds of football from both side of the border.

Th most interesting matchup will be the Western Final on Sunday afternoon between the Calgary Stampeders (12-6) and the British Columbia Lions (13-5) (2:30pm, TSN). This week there has been more drama in the Stampeders’ dressing room than an entire week of the Young and the Restless, and for that I give the Lions the advantage.

Travis Lulay is expected to be at the top of his game and the Lions are well rested. My only concern however is that it has been a while since they played a very meaningful game, so it will be interesting to see how they come out mentally.

Weekend Sports Preview–September 29-30–Ryder Cup, CFL, NFL, MLB

Saturday, September 29th, 2012

Phil Mickelson (Steven Newton, Wikimedia Commons)

The 39th Ryder Cup is currently taking place just outside of Chicago. On Day 1, the Americans took an early 5-3 lead on Europe thanks to some brilliant shot making by Keegan Bradley, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson and Jason Dufner.

On day two (Saturday, NBC, 7am), there will be four foursome matches in the morning, followed by four fourball matches in the afternoon. The best morning matchup will be Bradley and Mickelson against England’s Lee Westwood and Luke Donald. An interesting morning omission by Davis Love III is Tiger Woods, who played much better in the afternoon on Friday in four ball action than he did in the foursome with partner Steve Stricker in the morning.

Another golfer to watch out for on Saturday is Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts, who will be teamed with Spain’s Sergio Garcia against Americans Zach Johnson and Jason Dufner. Colsaerts had eight birdies and an eagle on Friday afternoon.

The Ryder Cup will then conclude Sunday with singles play (NBC, 10am).

Cornish fined for mooning in Regina–did he blow his chance for CFL MOP?

Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

Jon Cornish (Wikimedia Commons)

For most of the season, Calgary running back Jon Cornish has made the headlines for all of the right reasons. He leads the Canadian Football League with 947 rushing yards and is a strong contender to be the first Canadian to be named the Most Outstanding Player since Ottawa Rough Riders quarterback Russ Jackson in 1969.

On Sunday however, Cornish made the headlines for the wrong reasons.

According to the Canadian Press, Cornish was fined Monday for mooning the Saskatchewan Roughrider crowd in Calgary’s 30-25 loss Sunday at Mosaic Stadium. He apologized for his actions on Monday.

In a press conference, Calgary Stampeders’ head coach and general manager John Hufnagel confirmed Cornish “pulled his pants down low”.

It will be interesting to see if Cornish’s inappropriate conduct will cost him a chance of winning the Most Outstanding Player award, where he is presently up against Montreal Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo and British Columbia Lions quarterback Travis Lulay at this stage of the CFL season.

Who do you think should be the CFL MOP so far this season? Has Cornish blown his chance for his inappropriate act? Let us know at www.anysportanytime.ca.

Eskimos lose another tight one

Sunday, September 23rd, 2012

The Edmonton Eskimos played much better than they did a week ago against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, where they were hammered 51-8, but at the end of the day it wasn’t enough Saturday night at Commonwealth Stadium, where they lost 19-18 to the British Columbia Lions.

The Eskimos defense deserves high praise once again this season for constantly pressuring the Lions’ offense, led by Travis Lulay. However it was once again the offense that sputtered as they were only able to manufacture one second half field goal after a productive first half moving the football.

Lions destroy Stampeders

Sunday, July 29th, 2012

The Calgary Stampeders played their worst home game than they have in years on Saturday night at McMahon Stadium.

After a pair of lackluster performances against the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Edmonton Eskimos, the British Columbia Lions proved that they were still a significant force in the Western Division with a commanding 34-8 win over the Calgary Stampeders.

Travis Lulay also showed why he was the Grey Cup Most Outstanding Player. He was flawless Saturday with 315 yards passing and three touchdowns.

Paul McCallum also went perfect in the kicking game, going four for four.

Simon makes CFL history as all-time receiving yards leader

Saturday, June 30th, 2012

Geroy Simon (Wikimedia Commons)

The start of the 2012 Canadian Football League season began last night with an historic record set in Vancouver.

British Columbia Lions wide receiver Geroy Simon passed Milt Stegall of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as the all-time leader in receiving yards with 15,192.

The Lions slotback had five catches for 105 yards as British Columbia defeated Winnipeg 33-16 in a 2011 Grey Cup rematch.

Travis Lulay ran into the end zone for two major scores and running back Andrew Harris had 116 total yards to give head coach Mike Benevides his first head coaching victory.

Meanwhile earlier in Hamilton, the story at Ivor Wynne Stadium was all about a wide receiver and head coach as well.

Weston Dressler, at only 5’7″, had 13 catches for 180 yards and three touchdowns as Saskatchewan trounced Hamilton 43-16.

Lions beat Blue Bombers to win Grey Cup

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

In the 99th edition of the Grey Cup Sunday in  Vancouver, the British Columbia Lions defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers by a score of 34-23.

Travis Lulay, who on Thursday was named the CFL Most Valuable Player, was named the Grey Cup Most Valuable Player, after completing 21 of 37 passes for 320 yards and two touchdowns.

The Lions were the first team since 1994 (that year the Lions beat the Baltimore CFLers) to win the Grey Cup at home.

The Lions dominated the first quarter as they took an 11-0 lead, highlighted by a 19 yard run for a touchdown by Andrew Harris.

The Blue Bombers pulled within a touchdown in the second quarter after Justin Palardy kicked two field goals. The Lions led at the half 14-6.

In the third quarter, with the Lions leading 17-9, Lulay threw  his first of two touchdown passes. A 66 yard bomb to rookie Kierrie Johnson put the Lions up 24-9. Amazingly it was Johnson’s first career touchdown catch.

After the Lions went up by a convincing score of 31-9 early in the fourth quarter on a 6 yard touchdown pass from Lulay to Arland Bruce, the Lions allowed the Blue Bombers back into the game late with a pair of touchdowns to pull within a score of 31-23. But a Winnipeg onside kick failed, which led to a Paul McCallum field goal and a Lions’ victory.

Weekend Sports Preview–November 26 & 27–Grey Cup, NHL, NFL, World Cup Skiing

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

The 99th Grey Cup gets under way tomorrow at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver with a game between the B.C. Lions and Winnipeg Blue Bombers (TSN, 4:30pm).

The Lions are trying to become the first team since 1994 to win the Grey Cup on home soil. But they will have a lot of Edmonton Eskimo fans cheering against them after head coach Wally Buono’s ridiculous comment last week of “I hate Edmonton.”

The Lions have the Grey Cup MVP in Travis Lulay, while the Blue Bombers’ have the league’s top defensive player in Jovon Johnson.

There have been some interesting storylines heading into the Grey Cup. Blue Bombers’ defensive end Odelle Willis tweeted this past week how he wanted to go home to American Thanksgiving rather than practicing on Thursday, and said “a couple of more days and I’m out of this hoe.”

Also, hall of famers, Angelo Mosca and Joe Kapp got into a fight at an alumni luncheon in Vancouver after the two discussed a play in 1963 when Mosca’s hit knocked Lions’ running back Willie Fleming out of the game.

Getting back to the Blue Bombers and Lions, the Blue Bombers beat the Lions twice this year, 25-20 on July 28 in Winnipeg and 30-17 on August 13 in Vancouver.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Lulay named CFL MVP & Messam named Top Canadian

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Travis Lulay (Wikimedia Commons)

The Canadian Football League handed out its annual awards last night, and Travis Lulay, the quarterback of the British Columbia Lions, was named the Most Valuable Player.

Lulay led the CFL with 32 touchdown passes. Even though he had fewer passing yards to Anthony Calvillo of the Montreal Alouettes (5251 to 4815), and a lower passer rating (95.8 to 98.2 for Calvillo and 99.3 to Ricky Ray of the Edmonton Eskimos), Lulay led the Lions to a 11-7 record, best in the CFL, and a dominating 43-1 win over the Alouettes in the final week of the regular season.

An Edmonton Eskimo also received some hardware Thursday night in Vancouver. Running back Jerome Messam was named Top Canadian after becoming the first Canadian since 2000 to run for 1,000 yards. Messam was third in rushing with 1,057 yards.

Other award winners were Josh Bourke of the Montreal Alouettes who was named the most outstanding lineman, Jovon Johnson of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers who was named the most outstanding defensive player, kicker Paul McCallum of the British Columbia Lions who was named the most outstanding special teams player, wide receiver Chris Williams of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats who was named the most outstanding rookie.

Blue Bombers and Lions in Grey Cup

Sunday, November 20th, 2011

We now know the two teams that will be participating in the 99th Grey Cup next week in Vancouver.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are representing the Eastern Conference and the British Columbia Lions are representing the Western Conference.

On Sunday, both teams were extremely dominant. The Lions’ offense and the Blue Bombers’ defense played at an exceptional high level. The Lions defeated the Edmonton Eskimos 40-23 and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 19-3.

In Vancouver, the Eskimos displayed a horrible performance defensively. Their tackling simply deserved an F.

Weekend Sports Preview–November 19 & 20–CFL West & East Final, Presidents Cup, NCAA, NHL, NFL

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

The Edmonton Eskimos are only one win away from the 99th Grey Cup in Vancouver, British Columbia next weekend.

On Sunday, they will have to find a way to beat the Lions without star running back Jerome Messam. As I mentioned earlier in the week, I find the possibility of the Eskimos’ running game getting going is still there because the Lions’ defensive line and ability to stop the run has sometimes been a weakness, even with Solomon Elimimian and Brent Johnson leading the way.

But the Eskimos will need to find a way themselves to do a better job in stopping quarterback Travis Lulay, the Western Division nominee for the Canadian Football League’s most outstanding player award. In the Lions’ 29-20 win over Edmonton on October 29, Lulay had three touchdown passes for 322  yards.

Eskimos finalists for CFL Awards

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

A pair of Edmonton Eskimos have been named finalists for the Canadian Football League Awards.

Running back Jerome Messam has been named a finalist for the Top Canadian and linebacker J.C. Sherritt has been named a finalist for the Top Rookie in the CFL this season.

Messam, from Brampton, Ontario, finished third in the Canadian Football League this season with 1,057 rushing yards, behind Brandon Whitaker of the Montreal Alouettes (1378) and Cory Boyd of the Toronto Argonauts (1141). Messam became the first Canadian running back since Sean Millington of the British Columbia Lions in 2000 to rush for 1,000 yards in one season.

Messam will be favoured against Sean Whyte of Surrey, British Columbia– the kicker for the Montreal Alouettes.

Sherritt had 72 tackles and three sacks for the Eskimos. He’ll be the underdog against Hamilton Tiger Cats’ wide receiver Chris Williams, who led his team with 1,064 receiving yards.

Following are the other nominees with my favourites in bold:

Most Outstanding Player– QB Anthony Calvillo–Montreal Alouettes vs. QB Travis Lulay–British Columbia Lions

Most Outstanding Defensive Player–DB Jovon Johnson–Winnipeg Blue Bombers vs. LB Jerrell Freeman–Saskatchewan Roughriders

Best Special Teams Player–KR Chad Owens–Toronto Argonauts vs. K Paul McCallum–British Columbia Lions

Best Offensive Lineman–OT Josh Bourke–Montreal Alouettes vs. OL Jovan Olafioye–British Columbia Lions

Forzani named CFL Canadian of the Week

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

Calgary Stampeder wide receiver Johnny Forzani has been named the top Canadian for week eighteen of the Canadian Football League’s regular season.

On Sunday, at Montreal’s Percival Molson Stadium, Forzani caught two touchdown passes from Stampeder quarterback Drew Tate in a 32-27 win over the Montreal Alouettes.

Forzani caught his first touchdown pass for 33 yards at 2:52 of the first quarter to put the Stampeders up 7-0. He then caught his second touchdown pass for 18 yards at 3:50 of the fourth quarter to put the Stampeders up 29-21.

Forzani ended his day with six catches for 108 yards. It was the second time this season that Forzani had a 100 yard performance against the Alouettes. On August 27, in Calgary’s 38-31 win over Montreal at McMahon Stadium, Forzani had 6 catches for 101 yards.

B.C. Lions’ quarterback Travis Lulay was named top offensive player and defensive tackle Khalif Mitchell was named top defensive player.

Eskimos lose tight one to Lions

Saturday, October 29th, 2011

The Edmonton Eskimos will have to wait another week to see if they will finish in first place in the Western Division.

On Saturday night at B.C. Place Stadium, the British Columbia Lions defeated the Edmonton Eskimos 29-20. The Lions and Eskimos are tied for first place in the Western Division at 10-7, but the Lions have the tie-breaker, having won the season series 3-1.

The Eskimos can still finish first in the West with a win next week at home against the Saskatchewan Roughriders and a loss by the British Columbia Lions against the Montreal Alouettes.

The Eskimos were the more undisciplined team Saturday night. They took two key face mask penalties that gave the Lions two key first downs that prolonged drives.

After the Eskimos pulled within two points, 22-20, on a 16 yard touchdown pass from Ricky Ray to Tyler Scott, the Lions marched down the field on their own, highlighted by a 14 yard touchdown pass from Travis Lulay to Arland Bruce.

The Calgary Stampeders (9-7) can also still win the Western Division, with two victories against the Montreal Alouettes and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, in addition to an Eskimos and Lions loss next week.

In other CFL news, Toronto Argonauts’ cornerback Byron Parker set a CFL record last night with his ninth career interception for a touchdown in the Argos’ 27-22 win against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
