This week on 15 Minutes of Fame, we give a passing grade to the NHL’s All-Star Weekend, touch on Tim Thomas’ decision to skip his team’s White House visit and discuss the biggest surprises in the league at the All-Star break. As well: we give out our Super Bowl predictions and comment on a couple of massive MLB contracts!
In the GABBYs: The Canadian women’s soccer team, US Senator John Kerry, Jay Cutler, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Kyle Williams and Scott Gomez. The Punchline this week is Minnesota Vikings kicker Chris Kluwe!
New York Rangers agitator Sean Avery is in the middle of some off-ice controversy this week, but it’s not what you might think!
No, he isn’t insulting an ex-girlfriend in the media or running his mouth about a fellow NHLer on a sports talk show. In fact, he actually hasn’t done anything wrong in this case. Believe it or not, Avery is on the receiving end of this one and it really has nothing to do with hockey.
The 31-year-old former Vogue intern teamed up with the Human Rights Campaign and released a 30-second video for “New Yorkers for Marriage Equality” over the weekend, where he came out in support of same-sex marriage. According to ESPN, Avery appears to be the first pro athlete in New York to join the campaign, which features videos from people like NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the daughter of George W. Bush and several politicians and celebrities.
While most of the initial feedback was positive, the vice president of a sports management agency that represents a handful of NHLers has ripped Avery, calling same-sex marriage “wrong” on the company’s official Twitter account! (more…)
Remember the time the Tampa Bay Lightning are tied for top spot in the Eastern Conference?
That time would be now, thanks to a 1-0 overtime win over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night, a 34-save shutout for newly acquired goalie Dwayne Roloson. The Lightning picked up Roli the Goalie on the weekend for practically nothing from the New York Islanders, sending him from the bottom of the standings to near the top.
I’ve always liked the way the unassuming Roloson carries himself – when he was with the Oilers, the thing that always stuck out for me was his insistence that he still had years of hockey ahead of him despite his age, since he had shared starting duties for a big chunk of his career. Some people didn’t believe him, but here he is at 41 looking like a young buck. (After the jump: All-Star voting, Ovechkin’s new commercial, Kovalchuk’s brutal night and a WJHC final preview!)(more…)
It’s been a funny season for the Boston Celtics so far.
Their 26-7 record leads the Eastern Conference, despite the massive run the Miami Heat have been on since late November. The Celtics have their own “Big Three” of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen to compete with the Wade/James/Bosh tandem of their conference rivals. So it’s been a good season on the court so far.
Off the court though, it’s a different story!
Lets start with Pierce – Celtics fans are upset this week after “The Truth” was hit with a $15,000 fine by the NBA for “throwing an object” into the stands in a recent win over the Pacers, the same game that saw him drink a fan’s water. According to ESPN (via Celtics Hub), the league won’t confirm what he threw, but it might have been his gum.
Pierce was subbed out after picking up his second foul with eight minutes left in the first quarter. A FoxSports feed of the game shows him taking his gum out of his mouth and giving it a flick as he passes the scorer’s table. It was nothing crazy, there was no big wind up or anything. Was that it? The NBA won’t say… (more…)
The last we heard from The Answer, he was off to Istanbul to suit up for Besiktas Cola Turka of the Turkish Basketball League after not getting any looks from NBA clubs. Aside from the name recognition, it doesn’t sound like he has done a whole lot for his new team, but he’s back in the headlines this week!
An alleged Iverson tweet has the basketball world talking, specifically fans of Australia’s Sydney Kings. I say “alleged” because no one is quite sure that the entire thing isn’t completely fabricated…
Australia’s The Daily Telegraph reported this week that AI had this to say on his Twitter account: “I am very happy here in Istanbul, but if I don’t return to the NBA I am considering a move to Australia after my two-year contract is up. I hear Sydney is a real good city to live in. My boy Rodney asked me to come over. I am comin!” (more…)
