The Toronto Blue Jays have decided to part ways with Vladimir Guerrero without him even dressing in a Toronto Blue Jay uniform.
On Tuesday, the Blue Jays parted ways with Guerrero, who was playing for the Las Vegas 51s (Blue Jays AAA team) in the Pacific Coast League.
Guerrero had just come off solid game where he went four for five in a 13-3 win over Tucson.
Guerrero, who is 37 years of age and is one of the greatest Montreal Expos in history, felt he was ready to play now with the Blue Jays. Toronto GM Alex Anthopoulos disagreed and felt Guerrero needed more time to polish his skills.
I’m sorry. But really Alex? Guerrero is a slugger, and a valuable bat that would help your team now and just maybe get into the postseason for the first time in two decades. The guy has 449 career home runs and wanted to play in Toronto. How many guys in the last ten years have said that?

The Toronto Blue Jays surprised many yesterday by opening their wallets and signing a player very familiar to Canadian baseball fans.
Former Montreal Expo Vladimir Guerrero is coming back to Canada and to play in Toronto.
Guerrero, a native of the Dominican Republic, played with the Expos from 1996-2003 and was a four time all-star over that time, before moving on to play with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles.
Guerrero could be a key component the Blue Jays need. A key bat in the middle of the lineup. Guerrero obviously doesn’t have as much speed as he used to but continues to hit the ball with consistency, something Toronto needs with the early struggles of Jose Bautista. Last year, Guerrero hit .290.

The Texas Rangers were the talk of the American League last year as they surprised many by not only getting by the Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners to win the American League West to win the division, but getting by the New York Yankees to win the American League Championship Series in six games as well.
In comes third baseman Adrian Beltre from Boston and catcher Mike Napoli from the Los Angeles Angels (via Toronto) and out goes ace Cliff Lee to Philadelphia, designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero to Baltimore and closer Frank Francisco to Toronto. Beltre became expendable in Boston when they acquired first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and moved Kevin Youkilis to third. On paper Lee would obviously be the most significant loss, but don’t forget, he only joined the Rangers at the trade deadline last year, when Texas had a huge lead in the division.

In my first of a six-part series this week, I will examine the American League East.
The New York Yankees have dominated the division, winning ten of the last thirteen years. However they have only one World Series since 2001. Despite outstanding production in the middle of their batting order, (Robinson Cano, Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira) it is the pitching depth that I’m concerned about the most. After C.C. Sabathia, the Yankees don’t have much. A.J. Burnett and Phil Hughes will need to have better seasons in 2011 than 2010, where they each had an earned run average above 4.00.

Before I get into the details about the specifics of the Fall Classic, I need to go on a little rant.
Unless the World Series ends in a sweep, then for the second consecutive year the World Series will finish in November.
Personally, I think that’s wrong.

It’s the time of year where hockey, baseball, and football (and next week basketball) collides at the same time.
The busiest time of the sports year indeed.
Here is what I’ll be watching:
Friday–6pm–MLB–Game Six, American League Championship Series–New York Yankees @ Texas Rangers–(Rangers lead ALCS 3-2)–Sportsnet One–The Texas Rangers can make their first World Series appearance in franchise history with a victory over the New York Yankees either this evening or tomorrow. Colby Lewis will pitch for the Rangers against Phil Hughes for the Yankees. Despite being named to the American League All-Star Game, Hughes has struggled in the playoffs, posting a 5.72 earned run average in 11 innings to date. The Rangers have been led by a former Jay and a former Expo in the playoffs. Catcher Bengie Molina (Blue Jay in 2006) is batting .385 with two home runs and seven runs batted in. Designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero (Expo from 1996-2003) has 11 hits and is batting .297.

The Weekend Sports recap is coming a day later than normal this past weekend because I wanted to include my thoughts on the outstanding game five in the American League Divisional Series last night.
The Texas Rangers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 5-1 in the deciding game with the winner to face the New York Yankees in the ALCS. The Rangers won with remarkable aggressiveness on the base paths. In the first inning, while at second base, Elvis Andrus went home on a routine ground ball to first. We then saw almost a mirror image play by Vladimir Guerrero in the sixth when Ian Kinsler hit into a fielder’s choice with Guerrero at second. Guerrero, like Andrus, caught the Rays napping defensively, and just kept running for home. Heck, even catcher Bengie Molina had his first stolen base in four years! The Rangers deserve it, as they won the first divisional league series in Major League Baseball history, where the road team won every game.
