Russell Wilson (Larry Maurer, Wikimedia Commons)
It’s wildcard weekend in the National Football League with four entertaining games. The one I think everyone is excited about the most will take place Sunday afternoon as the Washington Redskins take on the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC (FOX, 2:30 p.m.).
This is also a battle of two rookie quarterbacks with Russell Wilson of Seattle taking on Washington’s RG3. A lot of people are surprised Seattle is a three point favourite. I’m not, based on how well the Seahawks have played throughout December. However, don’t forget the Seahawks had a losing record on the road this season, and are much more comfortable in the Pacific Northwest.
Here are the other events I’ll be watching:
Saturday–World Junior Hockey Championship Final–Sweden vs. United States–TSN–6:00 a.m.–The 2013 Championship Final has two strong Calgary connections. The top American player, John Gaudreau, forward from Boston College, is a draft pick of the Calgary Flames (4th round in 2011) and one of Sweden’s top snipers is Victor Rask of the Calgary Hitmen. The American defense as a collective unit is exceptional. Seth Jones, Jacob Trouba and Jake McCabe have been excellent in the medal round in wins over the Czech Republic and Canada.

Adrian Peterson (Mike Morbeck, Wikimedia Commons)
The Minnesota Vikings and the Washington Redskins are the last two teams to qualify for the NFL postseason.
On Sunday, Adrian Peterson ran for 199 yards as the Vikings upset the Green Bay Packers 37-34 at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, in what was quite possibly the very best NFL regular season game in 2012.
The ebb and flow of the game was fantastic throughout and guess what? The two NFC North foes will battle again next Saturday night at Lambeau.
Meanwhile, the Redskins qualified for the postseason with stellar running attack of their own. Alfred Morris had 200 yards rushing in Washington’s 28-18 win over Dallas. With the win, the Redskins won the NFC East and will host the surging Seattle Seahawks next weekend in the NFC Wildcard. This will be a great battle of rookie mobile quarterbacks. with Robert Griffin III playing Russell Wilson.

Robert Griffin III (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
There are four games that matter immensely in the National Football League this weekend–the two NFC East matchups and the NFC North matchups.
The winner of Washington-Dallas (Sunday, NBC, 6 p.m.) wins the NFC East. Despite winning six straight games, the Redskins (9-6) may have to win a seventh to qualify for the postseason. In their first game on American Thanksgiving Day, Robert Griffin III had four touchdown passes, and 311 passing yards in a 38-31 Washington win. The Dallas Cowboys (8-7) are eliminated from the playoffs with a loss.
If Washington loses, they can still qualify for the postseason with a Minnesota loss to Green Bay (Sunday, FOX, 2 p.m.) and a Chicago loss to Detroit (Sunday, TSN2, 11 a.m.).
The Vikings (9-6) are in a difficult spot as they have to host the Packers (11-4), who are battling San Francisco for the number two seed. Minnesota clinches a playoff spot with a win and could also get into the playoffs with a Washington win, Detroit win and Philadelphia win over the New York Giants (Sunday, FOX, 11 a.m.).

Jay Cutler (Mike Shadle, Wikimedia Commons)
An 11-5 record and an impressive performance by the Atlanta Falcons defense on Thursday has put me at 109-67-1 for the season heading into Sunday’s week 13 games.
Here are the rest of my week 13 picks:
11am
Buffalo over Jacksonville–I know the Bills’ defense is horrible, but so is Jacksonville’s. Buffalo wins a tight one at home.
Chicago over Seattle–The Bears are back on offense with Cutler at quarterback, which poses problems for the Seahawks.
Detroit over Indianapolis–In an exciting game, the Lions have played very well recently in losses to Green Bay and Houston. Another tough opponent this week, but the Colts will lose a close one on the road.
Green Bay over Minnesota–The Vikings aren’t playing as good of football now compared to the beginning of the season.

Robert Griffin III (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
Ok. This was the first time I had the opportunity to watch one of the most exciting players currently in the National Football League on Thursday and you have to be excited.
Robert Griffin III is the real deal, and on American Thanksgiving, with a large television audience watching his every move, he had an outstanding second quarter.
RG3 threw three touchdown passes Thursday in a 38-31 win over the Dallas Cowboys. His arm strength is what impressed me the most. He found Aldrick Robinson for a 68 yard touchdown and Pierre Garcon for a 59 yard touchdown. At 5-6, the Redskins are now only a win and a loss back of the New York Giants for first in the NFC East. But RG3 wasn’t the only quarterback to have a great second quarter Thursday. Tom Brady of the New England Patriots did too, as he threw three touchdown passes in the second quarter in a 49-19 romp over the New York Jets. The Patriots have now scored 108 points in their last two games after blasting the Indianapolis Colts 59-24 last week at Foxboro.

Michael Vick (Wikimedia Commons)
I am now 69-50 on the season after San Diego’s impressive defensive performance Thursday night where they completely shut down the Chiefs offense. Both Demorrio Williams and Shaun Phillips recorded fourth quarter touchdowns on a 58 yard interception return and a fumble in the end zone in a 31-13 victory.
Here are the rest of my Week 9 picks:
11am
Miami over Indianapolis–The Dolphins defense against the Jets last week was excellent and will win a second straight road game even though Dolphins starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill has a sore ankle.
Houston over Buffalo–The Texans are better on offense and defense. Could be over by noon.
Baltimore over Cleveland–The Ravens might have got spanked by the Texans in their last game, but have had two weeks off since to figure out what went wrong.
Denver over Cincinnati–Peyton Manning is looking great. He is now third in passing yards (behind Brady and Brees) with 2301 (more…)

Taylor Hall (Wikimedia Commons)
It might be too early to call a particular game a must win. But on Saturday night at the Shark Tank in San Jose, it could just be a must win for the struggling Edmonton Oilers (CBC, 8pm).
After a hot October where the Oilers at one time led the Western Conference, it has been a tough grind. Since November 5, the Oilers have been 6-13, and have fallen from first to twelfth.
Luckily though, there is still 51 games left for the Oilers to turn things around, but there could be no more important game to their 2011-12 schedule than tonight. The Oilers currently find themselves four points back of the San Jose Sharks and Phoenix Coyotes for a playoff spot in the West. So at the end of the night, they could be as close to two points back, or possibly as far as six points out.
Even though the Oilers lost 4-2 to Phoenix Thursday, a very positive sign was the play of Taylor Hall, who scored both Oiler goals. It was his first game back after missing three weeks with a shoulder injury.

Donovan McNabb (Bing Images)
The Donovan McNabb experiment in Minnesota has completely come to a close.
On Thursday, the Vikings, at 2-9, released McNabb after originally acquiring him from the Washington Redskins in the offseason.
McNabb completed 94 of 156 passes for 1026 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions in six starts with the Vikings in 2011. He was replaced by starter Christian Ponder on October 16. McNabb’s primarily weakness however was his inability to throw a long pass, as he completed just five of his 94 completions for over 25 yards, according to the Associated Press.
The question now is where will McNabb go? Well, with Jay Cutler out for a while with a broken thumb that required surgery in Chicago, it appears there may be a definite opportunity there. The Bears are in the thick of things in the NFC North at 7-4. McNabb, if he goes to Chicago, won’t have to do much either, as they already have a great running game led by Matt Forte, great special teams led by Devin Hester and great defense led by Brian Urlacher. Oh, and McNabb is also from Chicago.

It is an absolute marvelous time to be an Edmonton sports fan. The Oilers are in first place and the Edmonton Eskimos (10-6) can clinch first place in the Western Division with a win over the British Columbia Lions (9-7) at B.C. Place tonight (TSN, 8:00PM).
So when was the last time the Eskimos finished first in the West? You have to go all the way back to 2003 when they finished with a record of 13-5 and beat the Montreal Alouettes 34-22 to win the Grey Cup in Regina.
If the Eskimos hope to finish first in the West, they’ll need to play a full sixty minutes on the road, something they failed to do last week in Toronto. Edmonton once had a 31-3 lead but allowed the Argonauts to make things interesting in the final quarter, as the Boatmen scored the last three touchdowns.
If the Eskimos do lose, they’ll need to beat Saskatchewan next week and hope Montreal beats British Columbia to finish first in the West.
A key to the Eskimos tonight will be Ricky Ray and Jerome Messam, who were both named as CFL Players of the week– Ray was offensive player of the week, and Messam was the top Canadian. If they can combine for 150 yards rushing, it puts the Eskimos in an excellent position to win.

Matt Ryan (Wikimedia Commons)
I just watched an exciting football game tonight.
If you liked offense, the Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons put on quite the show, with the Falcons winning 35-31. Both teams are now 1-1.
The Falcons were led by tight end Tony Gonzalez (83 yards receiving and two touchdowns), Michael Turner (114 yards rushing, touchdown) and Matt Ryan who had four touchdown passes.
The Falcons also spoiled Michael Vick’s first return to Atlanta since spending time in prison.
I’m very impressed in the early going by the Detroit Lions. On Sunday, the Lions had four touchdown passes from Matt Stafford in a 48-3 rout of the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chiefs got horrible news in the contest, as it looks like running back Jamaal Charles is out for the season with a torn ACL.
The Lions join the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots, Washington Redskins, Houston Texans, and Green Bay Packers at 2-0.
Finally the upset of the weekend in my opinion came in Tennessee, as the Titans shocked the Baltimore Ravens 26-13. But it was the passing game, and not the rushing game that beat the Ravens. Matt Hasselbeck threw for 358 yards, 125 to Kenny Britt. Both teams are now 1-1.

Ray Lewis (Andy Truello, Wikimedia Commons)
In the first of a weekly series you can read every Sunday night, here is my analysis of the day’s events in the NFL.
First off, I think the National Football League and its fans are relieved that we have seen some outstanding plays by kick returners. With the new rule, kickoffs are now at the 35 yard line, meaning the majority end up deep in the end zone. The result is a touchback the majority of the time, but surprisingly I did see two kickoff returns for a touchdown this weekend– a 108 yard return by Randall Cobb of the Green Bay Packers Thursday night and a 102 yard kickoff return by Ted Ginn Jr. of the San Francisco 49ers this afternoon against the Seattle Seahawks.
The upset of the week came from the Washington Redskins as they defeated the New York Giants 28-14. The Redskins I felt played strong defensively and pressured Eli Manning all afternoon. The Giants’ defense was horrible as Rex Grossman threw for 305 yards.
Finally the surprise came in Baltimore as the Ravens hammered the Steelers 35-7. I think many thought Baltimore had a chance, but nobody expected them to clobber Pittsburgh as much as they did. Ed Reed had two interceptions and Ray Lewis had one. In my Thursday blog, I felt the Ravens’ defense was aging a little. Now I feel they’re just more experienced.

Rafael Nadal (James Phelps, Wikimedia Commons)
The top four players in the world will be on Arthur Ashe Stadium tomorrow for the semi-finals of the United States Open at Flushing Meadows, New York.
In the first match at 10am on CBS, the first seed, Novak Djokovic of Serbia takes on the third seed Roger Federer of Switzerland, followed by the second seed, Rafael Nadal of Spain taking on the fourth seed Andy Murray of Great Britain.
Head-to-head Federer has the 14-9 advantage on Djokovic, and beat him in their last meeting in the semi-finals of the French Open at Roland Garros, 7-6, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.
As for Nadal, he has a 12-4 advantage over Murray, but we’ll have to watch Nadal’s fingers closely, as he recently burned two of them at a New York restaurant.
These are without a doubt the best tennis players on the planet and it a dream day for U.S. Open organizers even though there isn’t going to be an American involved.
The two remaining Americans, John Isner and Andy Roddick both lost on Friday. Roddick got hammered by Nadal, while Isner won a set and pushed Murray at times in losing in four sets.
The women’s semi-finals also go tomorrow with one match televised. World number one Caroline Wozniacki plays the favourite and 28th ranked Serena Williams of the United States at 6pm on CBS. Head-to-head Williams has the 2-0 lead, having beaten Wozniacki twice in 2009. The other women’s semi-final match between the ninth seed Australian Samantha Stosur and German Angelique Kerber, ranked 92nd in the world is not televised.

Rick Rypien (Wikimedia Commons)
Rick Rypien, forward for the Winnipeg Jets, has passed away at the age of 27 in Crowsnest Pass, Alberta. The Royal Canadian Mountain Police in the area are reporting they received a phone call yesterday afternoon about a “sudden and non-suspicious” death.
Rypien, a native of Coleman, Alberta, had played with the Vancouver Canucks since the 2005-06 season and had scored nine goals and seven assists in 119 NHL games.
Rypien had just signed with the Winnipeg Jets as an unrestricted free agent on July 2. He was very familiar with hockey in Winnipeg as he had played 116 career games with the Canucks’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Manitoba Moose. Rypien was also known for his strong versatility as he could play center and right wing.
A member of the Regina Pats in his junior hockey career, Rick Rypien was probably best known for being the cousin of the only Canadian starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl in the National Football League. Calgary native Mark Rypien, was named the MVP of Super Bowl XXVI as the Washington Redskins defeated the Buffalo Bills 37-24. Rypien completed 18 of 33 passes for 292 yards and two touchdown passes. Mark Rypien also became the first non-American born player to win the Super Bowl MVP.

Deion Sanders (Bing Images)
Even without a Hall of Fame Game, the NFL world came together to honour those inducted into the 2011 Hall of Fame class in Canton, Ohio on Saturday.
The list included Atlanta Falcons and Dallas Cowboys’ cornerback Deion Sanders, St. Louis Rams’ running back Marshall Faulk, Denver Broncos’ wide receiver Shannon Sharpe, Chicago Bears’ defensive end Richard Dent, NFL Films’ founder Ed Sabol, Washington Redskins’ linebacker Chris Hanburger and Los Angeles Rams’ linebacker Les Richter.
Out of the seven, I am the most familiar with Sanders, Sharpe, Dent and Faulk.
Sanders, who also spent a short period of time with the Washington Redskins, Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers, was known for his outstanding personality and versatility. He would be occasionally used as a wide receiver on the football field. Sanders also had an outstanding career in baseball, mostly with the Atlanta Braves. In 1992, he led the Majors in triples with 14.
Some of Sanders’ accolades include being named the Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year while with the 49ers in 1994. He was also a member of the Pro Bowl eight times and won two Super Bowls, with San Francisco in 1994 and Dallas in 1995.
