It was a solid performance by Team Canada today at the 2012 World Men’s Curling Championships in Basel, Switzerland.

Team Canada, led by 49 year old skip Glenn Howard of Midland, Ontario won his fourth World Championship of his career in a 8-7 extra end victory over Scotland’s Tom Brewster. Howard previously won the 1987 World Championship at Vancouver as a third for his brother Russ, threw  third stones again for Russ Howard in Canada’s Gold medal performance at the 1993 World Championship in Geneva, Switzerland and skipped Canada to World Curling Gold at the 2007 World Curling Championship in Edmonton. Howard has also won a World Title in four different decades, making today’s performance remarkably special.

Another interesting statistic is that it is the third World Championship at three different positions for third Wayne Middaugh. The veteran curler was also the second for Team Canada at the 1993 World Championship and skip for Canada at the 1998 World Curling Championship in Kamloops, British Columbia.

Stoughton curls a perfect game

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

Jeff Stoughton (Bing Images)

Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton was absolutely spectacular on Wednesday night. He curled 100% to lead Manitoba to a 5-1 win over Alberta and Edmonton’s Kevin Martin at the Tim Horton’s Brier in London, Ontario.

Manitoba moves into first place at 8-1, with Alberta, Ontario and Newfoundland tied for second at 7-2.

Stoughton joins Wayne Middaugh, Kerry Burtnyk, Glenn Howard and Kevin Martin as the only skips in Brier history to be perfect.

It wasn’t just Stoughton who was marvelous Wednesday night however. Manitoba John Mead also curled remarkably well. I’d give you Mead’s stats as well, but I think they he was close to 100% too.

Tomorrow is the final day of round robin play. Manitoba has Newfoundland and Quebec, Alberta has the Yukon/Northwest Territories and Ontario, Ontario has the Yukon/Northwest Territories and Alberta, and Newfoundland has Manitoba and Quebec.

The only team that can reach any of the top four is Northern Ontario’s Brad Jacobs, who sits in fifth place at 5-4. The only seven teams at the Brier are eliminated.
