The Edmonton Oil Kings are one win away from returning to the Western Hockey League’s Championship Final. On Sunday, the Oil Kings will play the Calgary Hitmen at the Scotiabank Saddledome in game six of the Eastern Conference Final, leading the series 3-2.
On Friday night in Edmonton, the Oil Kings had a similar start in game five of the series to what they had in game four. Complete dominance. The Oil Kings scored three first period goals en route to a 5-1 victory. Game six can be seen on Sunday afternoon on Shaw at 4:00 p.m.
The Edmonton Oil Kings have evened the Western Hockey League’s Eastern Conference Final series with the Calgary Hitmen at two games apiece after a 7-3 victory at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary on Wednesday evening.
Assistant captain Michael St. Croix of Winnipeg, Manitoba led the Oil Kings in scoring with four points (one goal and three assists). Other Oil Kings that recorded multi-point games included T.J. Foster of Slave Lake, Alberta (two goals and one assist) and defenceman Martin Gernat, a top prospect for the Edmonton Oilers (one goal and one assist).
The Calgary Hitmen have taken a two games to one lead on the Edmonton Oil Kings in the Eastern Conference final.
Left winger Calder Brooks of Emerald Park, Saskatchewan and center Brady Brassart of Vernon, British Columbia each notched a goal and an assist as the Hitmen won 5-2.
The Oil Kings had the slight edge over the Hitmen in the first and third period of play, but the Hitmen completely dominated their provincial rival in the second period where they scored five unanswered goals all within a time period of twelve minutes.
This week on 15MOF we update the Boston Marathon bombings, look at an apology (of sorts) from the Edmonton Oilers, check in with the latest player to go under the knife and we cheer on the Edmonton Oil Kings.
In the GABBYs: David Ortiz, Stephen Curry, Keith Yandle, the Toronto Maple Leafs, Yovani Gallardo & the supporters of Argentina’s Huracan football club. The Punchline this week is Liverpool striker Luis Suarez!
The Edmonton Oil Kings have evened their Eastern Conference Final with the Calgary Hitmen at one game apiece in the Western Hockey League playoffs.
Calgary Flames draft pick Laurent Brossoit made 23 saves as the Oil Kings trounced the Hitmen 6-0 at Edmonton’s Rexall Place on Friday evening.
It was a great game for Oil Kings’ defenceman Martin Gernat of Kosice, Slovakia. Gernat had two goals and two assists. Other Oil Kings who sparkled offensively were Curtis Lazar and Henrik Samuelsson who notched a goal and an assist each. Edgars Kulda also had a multi-point game for the Oil Kings with two assists.
It is a great time for junior hockey in the province of Alberta. Presently the Edmonton Oil Kings are playing the Medicine Hat Tigers in one Eastern Conference Semi-Final, while the Calgary Hitmen are playing the Red Deer Rebels in the other Conference Semi-Final of the WHL playoffs.
The hockey is intense and of very high quality.
A prime example was last night at the Scotiabank Saddledome. In a dramatic 2-1 Hitmen win, both coaches, the legendary Brent Sutter for Red Deer and Mike Williamson for Calgary, showed extreme emotion on the bench. In one particular instance, Sutter slammed a hockey stick on the bench to protest a five minute major penalty called against the Rebels.
This week on the show we’re talking about the NHL trying “non-binding mediation” to end the lockout & what’s next, the latest news on the Phoenix Coyotes ownership situation and a major punishment handed down to the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks. As well, we look at concussions in the NFL, the NBA fining a team for its lineup & a prominent female skier who wants to race against men.
In the GABBYs: Ronda Rousey, the Toronto Maple Leafs, Kevin Love, Christine Sinclair, Mosaic Stadium & the Phoenix Suns. The Punchline this week is Dwight Howard of the LA Lakers!
The Western Hockey League has levied unprecedented sanctions against the Portland Winterhawks.
According to the Canadian Press, the Winterhawks have had their first round pick over the next five years taken away, in addition to their first five draft picks in the 2013 Bantam Draft. Winterhawks Head Coach and General Manager Mike Johnston has also been suspended for the rest of the season.
So, what did the hockey club do that was so wrong? Well, according to the Canadian Press, they paid for flights for eight player’s families to Portland, paid for player’s summer training programs, and provided a team captain with a cell phone.
One of the biggest sports stories in 2012 has been sanctions by various leagues against their respective teams. But the penalty by the Western Hockey League against the Winterhawks seems more severe than penalties handed out by the NFL against the New Orleans Saints and the NCAA against Penn State and Ohio State. Do you agree with the WHL’s decision?
If you’re anything like me – and I’m pretty sure you all are – you’ve dished out an enormous amount of abuse towards referees and linesmen over the years.
For our entire hockey watching or hockey playing lives, we’ve all basically disagreed with every single call these lads have made, unless of course it was for our team. Sure, it’s a bit unfair, but if they just made the right call all the time, we wouldn’t have this problem. Am I right?! (more…)
This week on 15 Minutes of Fame we look into the Edmonton Oilers parting ways with their head coach (and what needs to change for the Oil to turn things around), we check out the latest NFL bounty news, and we run down the problem with umpires in the MLB.
In the GABBYs: Bikini hockey, Jamaican hockey, Matt Bonner, Coors Field, Ozzie Guillen & Stephen Strasburg. The Punchline this week is Philadelphia Eagles left tackle Jason Peters!
We’ve all seen what a Gongshow the first round of the NHL playoffs has been, but there is some crazy stuff happening in the ranks of the CHL these days as well!
First off, let’s give a shout out to the WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings. Not only have they won every game they’ve played so far in this year’s playoffs, but they’re also the only unbeaten playoff team left in the entire Canadian Hockey League!
If you think 11-0 is impressive, I’ve got another one for you – the Oil Kings are now riding a 22-game win streak into game four against the Moose Jaw Warriors, with their last loss coming over two months ago. Not bad, eh?
Not to be outdone, the OHL’s East Final has had a couple of noteworthy moments so far as well… (more…)
According to the Canadian Press, controversial hockey head coach Graham James has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting two of his former players, including former Calgary Flame superstar Theoren Fleury.
The name of the other player James sexually assaulted cannot be released to the public because a court-ordered publication ban has been enforced.
James abused Fleury from 1983 to 1985 and the unnamed player from 1989 to 1994. James has already spent three and a half years in prison for sexually assaulting former Calgary Flame Sheldon Kennedy.
James, who coached the Calgary Hitmen, sexually assaulted Fleury while he coached him in Moose Jaw and Kennedy when he coached him in Swift Current.
Fleury wrote a book of the molestation he experienced. “Playing with Fire”, by Fleury and Kristie McLellan Day has become a very popular book nationwide throughout Canada.
James, who had his court hearing in Winnipeg, will be sentenced on February 22.
We’re back with another week worth of sporty goodness – this time around, we’re looking at the decision to keep Ryan Nugent-Hopkins up with the Oilers and the keys to the team’s early success, as well as the latest “Shanabans” in the NHL. As well, we take a look at the Eskimos latest defeat and a huge effort from Edmonton’s Gord Hinse, along with the latest in the NBA lockout drama.
In the GABBYS: The WHL, Jonas Hiller, the St. Louis Cardinals, Terrell Owens, Julian Bursuc and Chris Cooley. This week’s Punchline is Nick Diaz!
Ryan Nugent -Hopkins will be wearing the final two digits of his birth year–93, if he makes the Edmonton Oilers this season.
On Tuesday, the Vancouver native and the Oilers’ first overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft wore number 93 in the team photo shoot.
This doesn’t mean it’s a slam dunk that Nugent-Hopkins will play with the Oilers this season. I believe there is a strong possibility you will see him return to the Western Hockey League’s Red Deer Rebels, and suit up for Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championship. Don’t forget, Nugent-Hopkins will be playing his round robin games for Canada in Edmonton.
The last time a player that did not directly go to the National Hockey League after being drafted first overall was Erik Johnson of the Saint Louis Blues in 2006.
Last season, Taylor Hall went directly to the Oilers from the Windsor Spitfires and scored 22 goals and 20 assists in 65 games.
