Did mooning incident cost Cornish CFL MOP?

Friday, November 23rd, 2012

The CFL handed out its player awards on Thursday night and Chad Owens, wide receiver of the Toronto Argonauts  was named the most outstanding player for 2012. Owens beat out Jon Cornish, the running back of the Calgary Stampeders, who ended up winning the CFL Most Outstanding Canadian award.

Cornish was trying to become the first Canadian to win the most outstanding player award since Tony Gabriel won the award with the Hamilton Tiger Cats in 1978.

So why did the panel go with a wide receiver over a running back? Well, it’s quite possible it stems from a mooning incident Cornish had with the Saskatchewan Roughrider crowd earlier this year. The CFL was simply not comfortable handing out an award to an athlete who lacked complete judgment in a particular situation.

In other awards, linebacker J.C. Sherritt of the Edmonton Eskimos was the top defensive player, Jovan Olafioye of the British Columbia Lions was the top lineman and wide receiver Chris Matthews of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers was the top rookie.

According to the Canadian Press, Calgary Stampeders’ running back Jon Cornish has been nominated for the Canadian Football League’s most outstanding player award.

Cornish, who will represent the Western Division, led the Canadian Football League this season with 1457 rushing yards and tied Kory Sheets of the Saskatchewan Roughriders for the CFL lead in rushing touchdowns with 11. Cornish also set a record for most rushing yards in a season by a Canadian and became the first Canadian to lead the CFL in rushing yards since Orville Lee of the Ottawa Rough Riders in 1988.

Cornish, a native of New Westminster, British Columbia, is up against Toronto Argonauts wide receiver Chad Owens, who set a CFL single season record for most all-purpose yards in 2012.

The last Calgary Stampeder to win the most outstanding player award was quarterback Henry Burris in 2010.

Cornish has also been nominated for top Canadian, where he is up against Montreal Alouette linebacker Shea Emery of Richmond, British Columbia.

Weekend Sports Preview–October 27 & 28–NFL, CFL, MLB & Short Track Speed Skating

Saturday, October 27th, 2012

The Edmonton Eskimos have a chance of clinching a playoff spot on Sunday when they play the Montreal Alouettes. At 7-9 they sit in last place in the Western Division, but will qualify  for the postseason in the crossover into the East because they will have a better record than the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The Eskimos will not have running back Hugh Charles in their lineup. Charles suffered a knee injury in the Eskimos’ 39-19 loss to the B.C. Lions last Friday. The Eskimos then brought back Cory Boyd this past week to backup Jerome Messam.

Stampeders clinch playoff spot with win over Winnipeg

Sunday, October 14th, 2012

The Calgary Stampeders are headed to the postseason.

On Saturday, Kevin Glenn threw for two touchdowns and had 286 yards passing in a 32-21 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

With the win, the Stampeders improve to 9-6 and cannot be caught by the 5-10 Hamilton Tiger-Cats,  meaning they are guaranteed at least a cross-over into the Eastern Division.

A major reason for the Calgary win was simply turnovers. Winnipeg turned the football over seven times, including four interceptions by quarterback Joey Elliott.

Weekend Sports Preview–October 13 & 14–CFL, MLB, NFL

Saturday, October 13th, 2012

The Edmonton Eskimos will face a difficult challenge Saturday against the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Commonwealth Stadium (Saturday, TSN, 2pm).

Luckily, they will have linebacker J.C. Sherritt, maybe the best defensive player in all of football back in the lineup.

This is a monumental game for Edmonton (6-8), who will not only want to expand their lead on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (5-10) in a possible crossover, but will want to win the season series against the Roughriders (8-6), because with a victory, they will only be two points back of Saskatchewan in the Western Division. Saskatchewan meanwhile is playing great football lately. They have now won three in a row after beating the Toronto Argonauts 36-10 on Thanksgiving.

Thompson named defensive player of the week

Thursday, October 11th, 2012

For the Edmonton Eskimos to make the playoffs, they will need defensive back Chris Thompson to be as valuable in the Eskimos’ secondary, as J.C. Sherritt has been on the Eskimos’ defensive line all season long.

On Friday night against Hamilton at Commonwealth Stadium, Thompson delivered with two interceptions in a 30-25 win over the Tiger-Cats. Thompson, who also had three tackles, was named the Defensive Player of the Week yesterday.

Winnipeg Blue Bomber Joey Elliott was named the offensive player of the  week for leading Winnipeg to an upset win over the Montreal Alouettes. Elliott’s 335 yards passing was very impressive because it came in Montreal, a place where opponents have had limited success.

Weekend Sport Preview–September 22 & 23–CFL, NFL, MLB

Saturday, September 22nd, 2012

One of the most intriguing stories heading into the weekend, is how the Calgary Stampeders’ running game will respond to Saskatchewan Roughriders’ head coach Cory Chamblin’s guarantee this week that the Riders will limit Jon Cornish to under 100 yards.

I really liked the Stampeders’ response actually. Both Cornish and John Hufnagel (Calgary’s head coach and general manager) both responded with the statement that all they are concerned about is winning football games and they could care less about statistics.

Stampeders hammer the Blue Bombers 44-3

Friday, September 14th, 2012

Right now it appears that there are seven competitive teams in the Canadian Football League. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are not just dreadful, they are down right horrible and would have a tough time beating the Ottawa Rough Riders’ worst clubs from the 1990′s on any given night.

Friday night in what was a predictable pounding, the Calgary Stampeders clobbered the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 44-3 at McMahon Stadium.

It was an historic night for Nik Lewis, who had 131 yards receiving and became the fifteenth player in CFL history to have 10,000 yards receiving.

Serena Williams (Sascha Wenninger, Wikimedia Commons)

Serena Wiliams just might be playing the very best tennis of her entire career. Tonight she will be facing top seed Victoria Azarenka in the women’s final of the United States Open.

In yesterday’s semi-final, Williams, the Olympic Gold medallist, pounded Sara Errani of Italy 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour. Azarenka meanwhile defeated the tougher opponent in Maria Sharapova in three tough sets to set up tonight’s match.

The power in Williams’ game right now is so huge, she could be considered the most powerful female athlete in sport today. The match can be seen on CBS at 6pm tonight.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching:

Saturday–U.S. Open men’s semi-final–(3) Andy Murray–Great Britain vs. (6) Tomas Berdych–Czech Republic–CBS–9am–Murray, the men’s Olympic gold medallist is playing what could be considered the best tennis of his career at the moment. His victory over Milos Raonic was sensational. He will be in tough on Saturday however against Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, who has a ton of momentum after his four set win over Roger Federer on Thursday. Berdych is 4-2 all-time against Murray.

Roughriders put beat down on Blue Bombers

Monday, September 3rd, 2012

There are blowouts and then there are blowouts.

On Sunday at Mosaic Stadium in Regina, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers completely got bombed in losing 52-0 to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Winnipeg got completely hammered in the first coaching game for Tim Burke. Saskatchewan snapped a five game losing streak in the process.

As good as Saskatchewan’s offense was, to pitch a shutout in today’s CFL deserves high praise. The Roughriders defense was led by former Kansas City Chief cornerback Tyron Brackenridge, who returned a blocked punt for a touchdown and also had an interception.

Labour Day Weekend Sports Preview–U.S. Open, CFL, MLB

Saturday, September 1st, 2012

On Monday the Edmonton Eskimos will play the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium in the Labour Day Classic.

Even though the Eskimos are two points ahead of the Stampeders in the CFL Western Division, my gut is telling me the Stampeders will be coming away with the victory. Why am of I of this opinion? Well three reasons.

Home teams have done better this season to date. The teams that have hosted games are 20-13 so far this season.

The Eskimos never do well on the second game of a two game road trip. The second worst game the Eskimos had this season was in Winnipeg after the team won an impressive game in British Columbia. This factor smells trouble.

Blue Bombers fire LaPolice

Sunday, August 26th, 2012

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have made a coaching change on Saturday.

On Saturday, the Blue Bombers fired head coach Paul LaPolice and named former Calgary Stampeder defensive co-ordinator Tim Burke as his replacement.

Burke, who had spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons as the Blue Bombers’ defensive co-ordinator, was the Stampeders defensive backs coach from 2005-2007 and their defensive co-ordinator in 2007. He also spent three years (2008-2010) as the defensive co-ordinator and defensive backs coach for the Montreal Alouettes.

Eskimos lose heartbreaker to the Blue Bombers

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

The Edmonton Eskimos should have, could have, would have, beaten the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Thursday night at Canad Inns Stadium in the Manitoba capital if it wasn’t for, you guessed it, Steven Jyles.

In the Blue Bombers home opener, Jyles fumbled the football with 28 seconds left and preserved a 23-22 Eskimo loss to Winnipeg, who recorded their first CFL win of the 2012 season.

If Jyles had only just kneeled down on the play, the Eskimos could have won the football game or at least force overtime. They didn’t and in the process fell to 3-2 in the Western Division Standings.

Ray & Barnes beat Blue Bombers

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

The Toronto Argonauts beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 25-22 on Wednesday night at the Rogers Centre, and they have a pair of Eskimos to thank the most for pulling out the victory.

Ricky Ray went 23 for 34 with 325 yards and three touchdown passes, while Jason Barnes had 72 yards receiving and caught the game winning touchdown from Ray with 2:31 left in the fourth quarter as the Argonauts came back to record the two points.

My reaction to the Argo major continues to be one of minor frustration– what if! What the Eskimos need right now more than any other position is a quarterback and Ray looked very comfortable in the blue and white on Wednesday. What if Edmonton Eskimos’ General Manager Eric Tillman had listened to his wife, and not made of the most controversial trades in CFL history.

On the other hand I still see Tillman’s standpoint. If he doesn’t make the deal, the Eskimos possibly fail to keep their talented defense together. Still, so far Tillman has been incorrect in his assessment of Steven Jyles.
