This week on 15MOF we look at the up-and-down Edmonton Oilers as they flirt with a playoff spot, the NHL’s Winter Classic announcement and we make our NCAA national championship predictions.
In the GABBYs: Traded NHLers, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Prince Fielder, Mike Rice, Vuvuzela attacks and the Blue Jays. The Punchline this week is the LA Lakers!
It was 2011 the last time we spoke and much has happened since then! This week on the show we recap the best and worst moments of the year from the world of sports, we talk about Sean Avery getting waived ahead of the Winter Classic, plus we recap the big game. Also: we’ve got a theory about the success of Daniel Alfredsson and the Ottawa Senators and we look at the main event at UFC 141 and tell you which fighter retired after losing.
In the GABBYs: The Green Bay Packers, The NLL’s Philadelphia Wings, Petr Mrazek, Tim Tebow, Yorvit Torrealba and the NHL All-Star voting process. The Punchline this week is basketball player Manny Harris and his strange injury!
How are ya, pal? I hope everything is good over there at NHL headquarters!
New York is such a nice city. How about all that snow you guys got this year though? How many times did you have to shovel your driveway? Do you have a driveway? I still get Sidney to shovel mine…well, not lately (damn Winter Classic! And by that, I mean the game after the Winter Classic!). Oh, I saw you on TV the other night – was that a new suit? It looked good, and that was a really neat tie you were wearing. I’ll have to get the name of your tailor sometime!
Anyways, on behalf of the Pittsburgh Penguins organization, I am just writing to tell you just what a great job you have been doing lately. Really, I mean it! Colin too, he’s really taking care of business! I like how his name isn’t pronounced like the other Colin’s I know – it really sets him apart, you know? It’s weird that his son’s name doesn’t have a cool pronunciation though. Maybe it skips a generation?
I can’t wait for the playoffs to start, how about you? Oh, by the way that reminds me: You guys really had a chance to send a clear and strong message that headshots are unacceptable and embarrassing to the sport this week and you totally succeeded! I’ve always said that we, as a league, must do a better job of protecting the integrity of the game and the safety of our players… (more…)
Hello folks – it’s your 15 Minutes of Fame video for Monday. Wait, what? It’s not Monday, it’s Tuesday! Due to technical difficulties I’d like to blame on (spins wheel) the crazy amount of snow we’ve had in Edmonton, we weren’t able to get our video up for your early week reading. So, with our apologies and the assurance that we’ll get our act together in the future, here is this week’s episode.
This week we look back on the collapse of Team Canada’s World Junior Championship team, the fan voting ahead of the NHL All-star game and the dominance of Sidney Crosby.
In this week’s GABBYs:
- On the good side, Mike Tyson is getting a TV show that’s not about boxing but about raising pigeons! What’s not to like? Buffalo’s LIndy Ruff reaches 500 wins all with one team.
- On the bad side, fights between the Memphis Grizzlies and Sidney Crosby is out with a concussion.
- We have our first ever candidate who gets both a good and a bad on the GABBYs. Check it out.
On Quick Hits: Roberto Alomar is the first Blue Jay to go to Cooperstown and Tiger Woods is taken off the cover of his own video game.

In this week’s GABBYs on the good side: Dustin Byfuglien’s scoring prowess, Tiger Woods’ cash haul and Canada’s success at the Spengler Cup.
On the bad side: PETA’s anger with Nate Robinson, Yao Ming and the NBA all-star game and Brett Favre’s career.

Mario Lemieux at the 2010 Winter Classic Alumni Game (Bloomberg)
Remember when the 2003 Heritage Classic in Edmonton drew 57,ooo people (including yours truly) to watch the Edmonton Oilers play the Montreal Canadiens? It was the first ever regular-season National Hockey League game played outdoors.
It was such a magical event that it drew the likes of Guy Lafleur, Wayne Gretzky and a still-active Mark Messier to an alumni game played a few hours before the regular-season game.
The whole event was broadcast on Hockey Night in Canada – Don Cherry even showed up wearing a cowboy hat. There was fanfare, fun and the feeling that just maybe, the alumni game was a little bit more exciting than the regular-season game. (more…)
Remember last week when the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team set an NCAA record with an 89th consecutive win?
Well, they squeezed one more win out of that impressive run before finally losing to ninth-ranked Stanford on Thursday night, ending the streak at 90 straight victories. Believe it or not, a loss to Stanford back on April 6th of 2008 was the last time the UConn Huskies tasted bitter defeat. It looks like they have their number!
Oddly enough, the UCLA men’s basketball team that held the previous record of 88 straight wins ended up losing to the same team, Notre Dame, on either side of their streak as well. (more…)
The last we heard from The Answer, he was off to Istanbul to suit up for Besiktas Cola Turka of the Turkish Basketball League after not getting any looks from NBA clubs. Aside from the name recognition, it doesn’t sound like he has done a whole lot for his new team, but he’s back in the headlines this week!
An alleged Iverson tweet has the basketball world talking, specifically fans of Australia’s Sydney Kings. I say “alleged” because no one is quite sure that the entire thing isn’t completely fabricated…
Australia’s The Daily Telegraph reported this week that AI had this to say on his Twitter account: “I am very happy here in Istanbul, but if I don’t return to the NBA I am considering a move to Australia after my two-year contract is up. I hear Sydney is a real good city to live in. My boy Rodney asked me to come over. I am comin!” (more…)
On this week’s episode of 15 Minutes of Fame, Jim and Geoffrey discuss the Edmonton Oilers and their “let’s play for the first overall pick” style of hockey. They also talk about the new series HBO is showing following the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals up to the Winter Classic on January 1st.
In this week’s GABBYs – Good: Redwings Lidstrom, Matt Hulsizer and Phoenix Coyotes and Cliff Lee selflessly takes a five-year $120 million contract. Bad: A bench-clearing brawl in the KHL, Brett Favre’s streak comes to an end and Gilbert Arenas is finally traded.
In Quick Hits: Tashard Choice asks Michael Vick for an autograph, the Edmonton Oilers dance team, and the Edmonton Oil Kings teddybear toss.

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, Anaheim Ducks forward Bobby Ryan scored one of the strangest goals of the year on Sunday night in a 6-2 win over the Minnesota Wild.
In the final minutes of the second period with the Ducks leading 4-2, Wild captain Mikko Koivu loses his stick in the corner, skates past Ryan, rips the stick out of his hand and then starts playing with it! Since the refs didn’t see what had happened, play continued and about 20 seconds later Ryan decides to pick Koivu’s stick up off the ice – before realizing it’s the wrong hand… (more…)
