Grizzlies and Heat advance to the conference finals

Thursday, May 16th, 2013

We now know half the teams who have qualified for the National Basketball Association’s conference finals.

On Wednesday night, the Miami Heat advanced to the Eastern Conference Final with a 94-91 win over the Chicago Bulls to win the Eastern Conference semi-final series 4-1, while the Memphis Grizzlies advanced to the Western Conference Final with a 88-84 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder to win the Western Conference semi-final series 4-1 as well.

The Heat win over the Bulls I think I can safely say was expected. However the fact the Grizzlies beat the Thunder is significant. It just proves how much the Thunder were missing their point guard Russell Westbrook, who needed knee surgery after suffering an injury against the Houston Rockets in the Western Conference quarterfinal.

Bargnani has solid start to the Raptors season

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Andrea Bargnani (Wikimedia Commons)

It has been a respectable start to the season for the Toronto Raptors as they are currently at 3-3 and only half a game back of the first place Philadelphia 76ers in the Atlantic Division.

So far this week the Raptors have defeated the Raptors have defeated the New York Knicks 90-85 and the Cleveland Cavaliers 92-77 to get back to the .500 mark after a three game losing streak to Indiana, Dallas and Orlando.

Over the last two Raptors wins, it has been the play of Bargnani that has been at a very high level. Bargnani had 21 points in the Raptors win in New York and 31 points in their win over Cleveland.

But it has been Bargnani’s defensive commitment that needs to be praised. He was a +22 last night, and that should please head coach Dwane Casey, who was brought in from Dallas in the off-season to improve the Raptors play on their own end of the court.

In Dallas, Casey got to know Dirk Nowitzki really quite well, and if he can make Bargnani half the player that Nowitzki is, the Raptors will be in great shape.

In terms of defense, one player in the NBA that has become a defensive stud to start the season is Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic. So far Howard is leading the NBA with 16 rebounds a game, including back-to-back performances where he had 24 rebounds last week against New Jersey and Charlotte.

In other NBA news, there have been two significant injuries to start the season. Manu Ginobili of the San Antonio Spurs is out five weeks with hand surgery and Zach Randolph of the Memphis Grizzlies is out eight weeks with a torn knee ligament.

Also today, the Sacramento Kings have fired head coach Paul Westphal and replaced him with Keith Smart, who has previous head coaching experience in Cleveland and Golden State. Smart also has a Canadian connection, as he played for the Halifax Windjammers of the World Basketball League in 1991.

Weekend Sports Preview May 14-15–NHL Conference Finals, NBA Playoffs, MLB, NLL Champion’s Cup, Players’ Championship

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

Ryan Kesler (Bing Images)

A jammed packed weekend of sports takes this weekend. The Vancouver Canucks will host the San Jose Sharks in game one of the Western Conference Final (Sunday, 6pm, CBC).

This is the first Western Conference Final for the Canucks since they went to the Stanley Cup Final in 1994 and lost to the New York Rangers in seven games. But it is interesting that the Canucks’ playoff most valuable player is a Yankee. Ryan Kesler leads all players in the playoffs with 15 points. He also leads the Canucks in the playoffs in +/- with a +6, power play goals (3), short handed assists (1) and game winning goals (2).

NBA Playoffs don’t excite me much

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

Excuse me if I don’t write too much about the NBA in the next month.

The reason is because I’m not a fan of the eight remaining teams left in the NBA Playoffs. Quite frankly, I think the eight teams left are the eight I dislike the most in the entire league.

Let’s start with the Memphis Grizzlies. How can a Canadian sports fan cheer for Memphis when they were once the Vancouver Grizzlies? Last night, Zach Randolph was excellent scoring 31 points in a 99-91 win over the first seeded San Antonio to eliminate the Spurs in six games. Here is a guy who has had an incredible amount of issues with the law, but is currently beloved in Memphis. I’m simply not a fan. Tim Duncan, like Dwight Howard the night before, turned the ball over too much (five times), which led to the Spurs’ elimination.

The Grizzlies opponent in the Western Conference Semi-Finals are the Oklahoma City Thunder. Like the Grizzlies, the Thunder moved from a different city in the last decade, in this case, Seattle. The city of Seattle is a great basketball city. The city of Seattle  have supported the Storm really well in the WNBA, and should have deserved a chance to keep the Supersonics.

Grizzlies biggest surprise of the NBA Playoffs

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

Zach Randolph (Bing Images)

The most significant surprise of the NBA Playoffs to date are the Memphis Grizzlies.

Memphis, the number eight seed in the West, currently has a 2-1 lead on the number one seed, the San Antonio Spurs.

Last night in Game Three, Zach Randolph scored 25 points as the Grizzlies defeated the Spurs 91-88.

The Zach Randolph story is an interesting one. The tenth year power forward out of Michigan State has sucker punched a teammate, criticized for marijuana use, experienced legal suits for sexual abuse and intimidation, and implicated as a supplier in an Indianapolis drug case.

While spending his first six years in Portland, he was known more as a Jail Blazer rather than a Trail Blazer.

But in his two years in Memphis, Randolph has been averaging 20.5 points per game. In the playoffs, he has scored 61 points in three contests, including 25 points in each of Memphis’s two victories in the series. His on court performances have quieted his negative past.

NBA Western Conference Playoff Preview

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

Tony Parker (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

A lot of times when people analyze the NHL or NBA, they start with the East. But www.anysportanytime.ca is founded in the West, so I’m going to start with the West!

(1) San Antonio Spurs vs. (8) Memphis Grizzlies–

Spurs Top Three–Tony Parker 17.5 PPG, 6.6 APG; Emanuel Ginobili 17. 4 PPG, 4.9 APG; Tim Duncan 13.5 PPG, 8.9 RPG.

Grizzlies Top Three– Zach Randolph 20.1 PPG, 12.2 RPG; Mike Conley 13.7 PPG, 6.5 APG; Marc Gasol 11.7 PPG, 7.0 RPG.

Analysis: The Spurs come into the series as the hands on favourite, having won four NBA titles since 1999. The fact that 2011 is an odd year as well will help San Antonio because their four previous Championships came in 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2007. Gregg Popovich is as good of a coach as any in the entire NBA and has maximized the performance out of his players. The question in San Antonio is the health of Manu Ginobili, who injured his elbow in a meaningless game last night in Phoenix and is doubtful for Game One.  This will be the fourth playoff appearance in franchise history for Memphis since moving from Vancouver in 2001. They have yet to win a playoff game, going 0-12 in the process. The X factor in the series is Randolph. The tenth year power forward has a criminal past dating back to his days in Portland, but seems to have everything under control now. Still the Spurs have the three best players and will win in six.
