The Calgary Flames had great resiliency Wednesday in Vancouver, but lost 3-2 to the Canucks in a shootout at the Rogers Arena. Down 2-0, the Flames scored twice in the second period on goals from Alex Tanguay and Mikael Backlund to salvage a point.
With the loss, the Flames are now two regulation losses and an overtime loss to start the season.
The Canucks got their goals from power forward Zack Kassian, Calgary native Mason Raymond and shootout goals from Kassian and Alexandre Burrows. One interesting observation was Alain Vigneault’s decision to play Kassian frequently with Daniel and Henrik Sedin.
Jarome Iginla led the Flames with seven shots, but only won four of 11 faceoffs, according toYahoo! Sports. One needs to ask Flames’ Head Coach Bob Hartley why Iginla took 11 faceoffs when the right wing position is obviously his natural position.

We haven’t seen much resiliency and patience from the Edmonton Oilers in recent years, but give Ralph Krueger credit Sunday night in Vancouver.
The Oilers were once down 2-0 to the Vancouver Canucks last night, but simply didn’t panic. They kept on going and got timely goals from Jordan Eberle and Ales Hemsky in a 3-2 shootout win.
Sure, there were defensive breakdowns that led to the two Vancouver goals from Alexander Edler and Zack Kassian, but Oilers goaltender Devan Dubnyk is starting to show great maturity in between the pipes. Dubnyk was sensational in the shootout and just seems more confident in his fourth year with the Oilers.

I was expected to be very busy this afternoon writing about a significant number of trades.
The bottom line, there might have been one that I’ll get to later. But living in Alberta, I think it comes as a huge surprise how little the Oilers did and that the Flames did nothing today.
Message to Nikolai Khabibulin, Ales Hemsky, and Ryan Smyth. It’s time to step up. Management has shown confidence in all three of you and it’s time to take your game to the next level.
As for the Flames, it looks like they will continue to battle for a playoff spot. Good news for Flames fans is that Miikka Kiprusoff is reminding you of 2004 and if you get into the playoffs, anything can happen.

Canada is now off to the semi-finals of the World Junior Hockey Championship.
On Sunday, Brayden Schenn recorded two assists as Canada defeated Switzerland 4-1 in their quarterfinal game in Buffalo.
The win now means Canada will play the United States in the semi-final this evening (5:30pm, TSN).
Expect Mark Visentin to get a second consecutive start. He looked awful on the one Swiss goal that was scored. He didn’t put his right pad up to the post, allowing for an opening for the puck to get by him. Then in the second period, Visentin had a complete mental lapse as he thought there was a Switzerland penalty and went off the ice, when in fact there was a Canadian one. Luckily Visentin’s lapse didn’t cost Canada a goal on that occasion.

The Canadian effort Tuesday was significantly strong against the Czech Republic.
Once again, the team continued to have a very balanced scoring attack as seven different players put the puck in the Czech net.
The final result was a convincing 7-2 Canada victory. Canada was led offensively by Brayden Schenn, who has played with the Los Angeles Kings this year (one goal and four assists) and captain Ryan Ellis (one goal and three assists).
Even though Canada is currently 2-0, they didn’t come out of Tuesday’s game unscathed.
